Inline images resized (aspect ratio messed up) in email reading

Hello,
I have updated to v10 recently and noticed weird behaviour of inline images.
When showing the message in Inbox/Sent folder eM Client will resize the images to some predefined thumbnail size and not just resize but also force 4:3 aspect ratio on all images no matter what their actual aspect ratio was.

On left the message on Gmail browser with the correct images, on right the same message in sent folder via eM Client.
When you open the image from the eM Client it even shows the message is 480x360 so it seems eM Client resizes the image during caching the messages and stores them this way locally.

I find this very annoying, was not behaving like that in all previous versions of eM Client, been using it for about 5-6 years (and owning 4 personal licenses since 2019)

I have not found any setting related to that. There is a setting under Mail, Composing about automatic resizing of images (you can select small, medium, large, original) but that is something else. In composing the images are correct (and resized to what is set in the settings - I use medium). This weird scaling only happens in message viewing (both in preview and full message mode). But when I reply or forward and go back to editing mode they are again correct aspect ratio.

no-one else finds this annyoing?

I see the same. In my case, like yours, inline images in portrait orientation are converted to landscape orientation. The results are images squashed vertically.

I have updated to v10 recently and noticed weird behaviour of inline images.
When showing the message in Inbox/Sent folder eM Client will resize the images to some predefined thumbnail size and not just resize.

If your pasted inline images are not the original size by default, “click on the image” and then click “Original” as in the 1st example screenshot below using the latest V10.0.3530 where the original pixel size in my example is 1080x665.

You can also click on “Custom” to check its the same pixel size and proportion as the original as in the 2nd example screenshot below where you will see its exactly the same size.

Then “when its sent it will be in exactly the same size as the original” as in the 3rd & 4th example screenshots below in eM Client and Gmail online.

Lastly you can set it to be eg: Always Original in V10 via “Menu / Settings (Preferences) / Mail / Compose” under the “Images section” down near the bottom as per the 5th screenshot example below on the Mac. You can also adjust “if you want large images resized or not” when composing.

(Click image and set Original which in this example is 1080x665 pixels)

(Click Custom to check its the same original size & that its in proportion)

(Sent Original Image example is exactly the same when sent in eM Client)

(Sent Original Image example is exactly the same when sent in Gmail Online

(Set eM Client to be Allways Original by default)

@cyberzork thank you for your time to reply but you probably did not read the post fully as I wrote about those settings not being what affects it

just today sent an email and it did the same
it’s noticable only with portrait images (it might be doing it for landscape images as well but it will not be clearly visible), they are squished to 4:3 aspect ratio
test it with a portrait oriented image to see for yourself

Yes i did read your post fully.

it’s noticeable only with portrait images (it might be doing it for landscape images as well but it will not be clearly visible), they are squished to 4:3 aspect ratio
test it with a portrait oriented image to see for yourself.

Whether i use a Portrait or Landscape inline image the pixel size and aspect ratio is identical. Nothing gets squished at all.

Here is a Portrait Image 480 x 872 pixel size composed in the latest eM Client V0.0.3530 for Windows.

Note:- After i initially pasted the image in, i clicked the inline picture and set “Original” on the dropdown.

After its sent, “its exactly the same Portrait Image pixel size and not squished” as in the 2nd screenshot below in eM Client, and also viewing that same eM Client sent email in Gmail online as in the 3rd screenshot below. Its also received identical size & aspect at the receivers Inbox.

As you currently own 4 personal licenses, i would suggest to go to the following eM Client VIP support page and login and lodge a support request to see why this is happening for you.

(Composing email in eM Client V0.0.3530)

(Sent email in eM Client V0.0.3530)

(Sent email after sending in eM Client V0.0.3530 & then viewed in Gmail Online)

@cyberzork yes when you select Original that will keep the correct aspect ratio
so you are correct that if I disable the feature that has a bug then the bug will not appear

but choosing anything else will mess up the aspect ratio for portrait images and squish them down

imo noone wants to have a picture with 3000x4000 pixels (which is a common resolution of todays phone cameras) inside the text

also the reason for the feature being in the client is to resize the images so that the email is not as big as with leaving the images in original size when full quality is not necessary

and btw you get only 1 year of VIP support when you purchase personal licenses, so even though I have a lifetime license for all future versions I no longer have any support

I don’t find any bug with sending any size inline images at all. I carn’t replicate your issue.

If i select the inline image and select Small, Medium or Large “they also stay exactly the same size and aspect ratio for me when sent”. I carn’t fault any of the preset sizes using Pc or Mac.

So as i advised, you will need to send that to support to diagnose why thats happening for you.

you get only 1 year of VIP support when you purchase personal licenses, so even though I have a lifetime license for all future versions I no longer have any support.

As you have then run out of your initial support time for all your licenses, then you can extend your license via the link below for another 12 months to get help with that specific issue. https://www.emclient.com/extend-support

All i can suggest apart from contacting official vip support, is:-

1). Try uninstalling and reinstalling the program (if you haven’t already) incase something happened when installing / upgrading to the latest version 10, and if you have Windows “don’t delete the database” when asked on the uninstall wizard. Then reinstall V10.0.3530 from the release history page and see if that fixes the problem.

Or

2). If uninstalling and reinstalling the program makes no difference, and you have and eg: IMAP, Exchange, Office 365 or iCloud (Non Pop) account and nothing in Local folders at the bottom left, then try going to “Menu / Accounts”. and remove and re-add your account/s via either the automatic account wizard or manual setup depending on your provider setup requirements to see if that fixes the problem.

If uninstalling and reinstalling the program makes no difference, and you have a POP account, then first "create a folder down in Local folders at the bottom left called eg: Old-Mail, and then drag / move all your current POP account messages and any custom POP message folders all under Old Mail. Then once they are all there, remove and re-add your POP account via “Menu / Accounts”. To re-add click “Add Account / Mail / Other” and follow the manual wizard. Remember at the end (before you click finish) to choose whether you want your messages in a separate folder tree or not. Then once your POP account is re-added again & working, then drag / move all your old POP messages and folders from Old-Mail back to your new POP account.

Note:- If you do try removing and re-adding your account/s, make a manual backup first via “Menu / Backup” just incase you need to restore for any reason. You can see when the backup is complete in Show Operations via clicking the dropdown on the right of Refresh top left.

If I may be allowed to throw in my two cents worth regarding this issue . . .

I composed an email in eM Client consisting of only a large (w=2448, h=3264) image which it resized to “Medium” by default upon insertion. After inserting the image, I selected “Custom” in the drop-down menu to see its size as seen in the screen capture below.

I mailed this to my Gmail address and, when viewed in Gmail, appeared correct.

I use eM Client 10.0.3530 as a desktop IMAP client for my Gmail account, and here is a screen capture of that same message read in eM Client.

The image portion of the messages’ HTML code seen in both Gmail and eM Client are, as expected, the same.

------------

IMHO, there is a bug in eM Client 10.0

@Dwynn_Lafleur

IMHO, there is a bug in eM Client 10.0

I carn’t replicate that same issue sent or received in eM Client.

As you will see from another test message sent this morning below, the sent and received inline images are identical size & aspect ratio. I would recommend to try what i suggested in my last post, or failing that, create a support ticket via the VIP support page if you have an active paid eM Client Pro or Personal version.

Here is another new composed email using V10.0.3530 this time using the Mac with an Inline Portrait .JPG Image 2450 x 3705 pixels that after pasting, i clicked the image and set it to “Medium” which then in Custom is 317 x 480 pixels.

Image sent in eM Client Sent box still the same size & aspect ratio…

Image sent in eM Client viewed in Sent box Gmail still the same size & aspect ratio.

Image received in eM Client Primary Inbox is still the same size & aspect ratio.

Image received in Gmail Primary Inbox is still the same size & aspect ratio.

I don’t know what to say. I performed my “experiment” after uninstalling and re-installing eM Client 10.0.3530 for Windows (twice, I think).

We are aware that some images are being displayed incorrectly in version 10.

It is a display issue, so the message itself is not in error and will appear correctly in other apps, and correctly in eM Client version 9. It is being investigated.
