I am new to eM Client, having arrived here from Thunderbird. I’m very happy with the program - except for one feature that really annoys me.
In Thunderbird, I can decide for myself when I want to receive incoming mail. There is a Get Mail button, which does just what its name indicates.
In eM Client, by contrast, new messages arrive all through the day, whether I am ready to see them or not. Each message causes a notification to pop in the bottom right corner of the screen. This can be distracting, especially when I am working in another application.
Is there any way I can fix it so that eM Client only retrieves messages when I ask it to. (In case it’s relevant, this is a POP mailbox connected to Gmail.)
So, no replies to my question. I assume that what I want is not possible.
Not to worry. But is there at least some way of disabling the annoying notifications that pop up whenever a message is received? That would go part way to achieving my goal.
Also, I see there is a setting “Synchronize items every … minutes”. Would unticking that setting help at all?
For POP accounts in V10, you would go to “Menu / Settings (Preferences) / General” and disable “Download messages from POP accounts at startup” and also disable “Synchronize items every X minutes”. Then Apply & Save settings. Then close and reopen eM Client & “manually press Refresh” when you want to check for mail.
Note:- POP Gmail Accounts no longer work in eM Client since late 2024 as per the Google Changes which started in 2022 that eM Client announced via the following link on less secure app logins which now has to use a secure OAuth passwordless token.
So if you want to use your Gmail account with eM Client, you need to use the add account / automatic account wizard which will setup as IMAP and that will then receive mail realtime as per the following eM Client with Google Workspace page.
The only way to stop the IMAP account receiving realtime in eM Client, is to eg: “disable IMAP checkbox in the account setup General Tab” but that then hides the entire mail account. So you would then have to re-enable it all the time to then receive mail.

You can go in V10 to “Menu / Settings (Preferences) / General / Notifications” and disable the first two check boxes on the right of incoming mail as per the below example screenshot. Then Save Settings.
Also if you have eM Client open and active, you can disable “the POP up new mail notifications” when the main window is active if you want to do that as per the example below.
