I have an existing email address which I am trying to change to my gmail account but without any success. Please can you offer some advice. I keep getting error messages

I’m not sure you can do this and it might cause problems even if you could.  You are better off just creating a new account for your gmail.

Well you could, if you are moving from POP to POP or IMAP to IMAP but you’ll not get all the Google goodies (Google Calendar, Contacts, Google Settings, XMPP). Impossible if you are moving from one protocol to another.

So much endeavor to only get some features. It is just easier, quicker and just makes more sense to do as you suggest Jay.

Hi Gary:

I concur.  Just seems to be really messy, not to mention the sync issues with intermingling the accounts.  If OP does not want to have 2 accounts active, they can copy all messages to local folders.
