If I paste a website address into the calendar is there a way to make that link active so that when I view the event, I could click on the link rather than have to paste it into the address bar?

If you mean Description field in General Tab when creating new event, then it will not be technically available to make links clickable.
It is not possible to synchronize them as html so they have to be plain text only.
