Got a display saying an update is available but Preparing to Install is stuck

I saw a display today (February 24, 2026) on my Windows 11 PC saying that a new update of eM Client is available. I clicked to go ahead and install the update. Now I’ve been seeing “Preparing to Install” for the last 10 minutes or so. Please advise. I’ll click the Cancel button for now.

Hey @alysenet

We have never experienced a problem upgrading.
We have always done the following:

1./ We have never accepted the “Push” upgrade other than to note availability
2./ To proceed, make a Backup (Menu >Backuo) then completely shot down eMC
3./ Download the relevant upgrade installation file HERE
4./ Move file to Desktop for convenience, if not already there
5./ Double click the .msi file and wait for installation to complete - be patient!
6./ Disable option to:
Set eMC as default application (as upgrading should already be set - do manually if not)
Run on Windows start up (you can set this later if you want - we do not)
7./ Finish
Launch eM Client

Again this procedure has never failed for us.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I guess that’s a good idea to do a backup before letting the update install. I prefer not to have to go out on a server for each update as you’re suggesting to copy and then manually install the update file, but hopefully the manual way would be just a one time workaround. Ideally we should be able to just make a mental note of the update availability, do a backup, then proceed with accepting an automatic update (meaning I wouldn’t need to grab it from a server myself) that finishes updating instead of getting stuck on Preparing To install.

Maybe I’ll try temporarily disabling my anti-virus programs; I wasn’t sure if I need to do that for em client updates. New Windows PC.

I don’t want to have to do a manual update installation every time em client comes out with an update. If I will truly need to do all that, I’ll be on the hunt for a new email app again. Thanks again for your input.

Hey @alysenet

You asked for help that I offered, if you do not want to follow what
is a tried and tested method when an issue is encountered that is
entirely up to you.
