From Postbox to eM Client worth it?

my userChrome.css only works partially
in the middle raw, the mail subject are very small fonts

Sorry the wrong forum

Thunderbird has simpler font options. For example, clicking “Font Size” on menu lets you readily increase or decrease the system font sizes.

I’m still learning the forum, not being sure whether I’m responding to a single person or to everyone. On your password question, I believe that is a security issue to prevent the profile from being used by others. CSS changed a few years ago, possibly release 91. Release 102 was likely the last one that had a close resemblance to Postbox, but most keystrokes on message management remain mostly the same.

Just to add my two cents, I was using SmallCubed’s Mail Suite for Apple’s Mail app. That got shut down by Apple, so I switched to PostBox just over a month ago… just before the deadline for free upgrade to emClient.

I am a sole proprietor with about thirty clients that I am in contact with multiple times every month, and the only efficient way to keep track of all the emails is using some form of tags or categories.

I liked many features in Postbox, particularly the tags and the ability to rapidly tag emails, and I found the search function to be very helpful. However, I was also finding it becoming increasingly buggy, and it would frequently lag and delay while typing messages (among other problems).

I am still experimenting with em Client before making the final leap. Like others have commented, the transfer of rules and tags didn’t go smoothly, so I am having to recreate all of my rules (I had a lot of rules for tagging emails in Postbox). The tags were also scrambled (a lot of emails getting the wrong tags, for example) and the tags that transferred from Postbox don’t seem to be recognized by em Client… the messages don’t show up in the tag filters in the folders panel, nor does the filter drop down in the message panel find the tags from Postbox. So I am having to manually find all those emails and re-tag.

The rules don’t seem to be as flexible as Postbox’s message filter. Postbox’s filters were fantastic, and with a single rule messages were reliable tagged, whether I was receiving or sending emails. I rely heavily on rules to tag and find messages from clients, and none of the rules imported from Postbox in a way that works. em Client’s rules are more challenging to set up and I find that I have to set up two or more rules to do what I could accomplish with a single Postbox filter.

So, basically, importing from Postbox using the em Client import tool basically made things harder. If you rely on rules or tags as much as I do, skip the import.

Also, it appears that the calendar only syncs with systems such as Google and Outlook. If you rely on an iCloud calendar like I do, you are out of luck. On the other hand, the connection with Dropbox (which is what I primarily use for client files) is a plus, since I often email one or more large files to clients, and I don’t want to clutter up my server space.

Having said all that, I am likely to switch to email client because I feel the tagging function works pretty smoothly, and so far it seems to work very well. I like the filter function on the top of the message panel. I am frustrated that there was basically about a month lookback on the free transfer… I had literally purchased Postbox a few weeks before that deadline.

I hope this helps.

eM Client does normally sync with iCloud Calendars.

When you add the account via the “automatic account wizard”, make sure you select / tick “Calendar in Services on the last screen” as per the below eM Client with iCloud info / setup page below.

(eM Client with iCloud) - Mail , Calendar & Contacts

https://www.emclient.com/em-with-icloud

Also see @Gary post in the following thread how to manually add an iCloud calendar.

Lastly you have to setup an “app specific password” if you haven’t already for your iCloud account, to then sync it with eM Client. See the following eM Client support page

@cyberzork, that was super helpful, thanks! All my accounts had been imported from Postbox, so the iCloud email account was already there (but not working since I had to then set up an app-specific password). So I didn’t see the initial screen that gives an option to set up an email, calendar, contacts, etc. I kept digging around in the iCloud email account settings and didn’t see any option to add calendar, so assumed it wasn’t an option. Thanks for correcting!

I was a PostBox user for years but left it for one single reason:

PostBox refused to put avatar icons next to incoming messages in the message list. This is a necessity for me because I find it easier to look down a long list of incoming messages and be able to recognize an email by the colorful avatar next to the message.

On the other hand, once I switched to eMClient I was highly disturbed that the most basic of features was missing: the ability to read an email, delete it, and automatically have the next oldest email load. This is called directional delete and despite years of people asking for this feature, it seems as if the developer has no interest in implementing it.

Not all Fonts are here to change settings - I have all set to ‘13’ but sone fonts are Mozilla “Systemfonts“

Hello,
can you elaborate why it is not usable for power users? We have a lot of power users in our user base.
I can see based on your posts:

  • Account grouping (we’ll probably add it soon)
  • Some specific options for filters/rules (these will be probably added soon based on Postbox users feedback)

Anything else?

Michal,

Probably the biggest failing in eM Client is the inability to set synch periods per account, to lessen the impact on mail servers. With 150+ accounts, and no way to control synch, even a dedicated mail server will struggle, never mind shared hosting.

However, the point is moot. Postbox is vastly superior to eMClient. Simply a fact.

I went from eMClient to Postbox. To be fair, I gave it a try, considering the reasonable discount in hopes that it would have improved. Sorry, not the case. Even if you gave away free licenses.

If anyone says it’s simply a case of adding the lacking features, they are not experienced Postbox users. Apples and oranges.

Whatever you paid for Postbox, it’s unlikely you will make it back from Postbox users. They won’t buy into eMClient.

I myself, would rather go back to using Thunderbird.

In the meantime, we’ll use Postbox until it disintigrates, which is unlikely. Works just fine, and we’ll stick with it for the duration. Many others will too.

In my opinion, the only way you are going to make your money back, is to keep Postbox alive, and keep milking that cash cow.

I would really like to love eMClient, but it simply cannot do the job.

Hope this sincere feedback helps.

What I do hear frequently (and I also miss) is that you can have an option to switch profiles like Postbox did, when starting the application.

Also an option to have a button to see the html code of the written e-mail/signature/footer etc.
Specially for the signatures. We use hand written html code signatures and sometimes have to change this.
And copy paste html code can give a lot of errors.

Cheers

With 150+ accounts, and no way to control synch, even a dedicated mail server will struggle, never mind shared hosting.

Can you elaborate on how Postbox controls sync ?

In Postbox you can set the sync time PER EMAIL ACCOUNT, and therefore stagger the sync for lesser important accounts.

In eM Client there is only ONE settting for time, for ALL ACCOUNTS, syncing at the same time.

Hence bombarding the mail server. Not good.

@ZaGenie

Ok. Does that work with IMAP, Exchange, Office 365 & iCloud accounts ? Or only POP accounts.

Yes, all accounts, and it’s especially needed for IMAP…

Well to be honest I asked you to be constructive to take part of improving things, but you didn’t seize the opportunity. The only constructive part of your answer is the first paragraph, which we may consider how to handle that better. On the other hand it is probably quite an edge case to have 150 accounts on one server. May I ask what is the use case for this set up? All the other paragraphs are general hates with no arguments. That won’t help us nor the product to improve.
And what is superior is of course matter of an opinion. If it is like that eM Client won’t have far larger user base and Postbox would not be acquired be eM Client but otherwise.

Michal, I have nothing against you, nor your product. I am simply giving you my opinion, based on using email since 1982, and having worked with pretty much every email client ever produced.

We really tried to love your product. In fact we tried several times over the years, and went back to Postbox every time. Your licence discount is very enticing, so we tried again. I personally spent two whole days putting eM Client through it’s paces.

Again, this is just my opinion, so take it or leave it…

eM Client is NOT for power users. Even Thunderbird is way better.

While it may be true that eM Client has more users, but probably they have one, maybe two email accounts. Fine, no problem.

While Postbox may have fewer users, the majority of those, are power users.

Those power users, have many websites. Myself, having 50+ websites, with 5 email accounts each, meaning 250 email addresses, all neatly funnelled into, and EASILY managed in Postbox.

Can eM Client do that? Not even close.

As Ken Blanchard once said, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.”

I wish you well with eM Client, and continued success.

As for us, we will simply keep using Postbox, until it disintegrates. Albeit unlikely, as it’s a very good product, and not in need of further development.

There is no need to fix something, that is not broken.

Hope this feedback helps. Bon appetite.

That’s of course your choice and I respect it. My question was what ELSE is missing (or problematic) for power users than email accounts grouping and syncing all accounts at once. On the other hand I would probably use aliases instead of hundreds of accounts. That’s why I was asking for the use case.

Are these accounts POP3 or IMAP?

They are all IMAP accounts.
