First impressions of a Postbox refugee - mostly good!

After a few days’ use, I’m pretty much sold. In some ways eMC is better than Postbox: a lot less buggy, a fair bit faster, plus I’m less likely to forget where I am (which filters were on etc) as I sometimes did in PB.
Critical feature for me is tagging in a consistent way across different email platforms (Gmail vs Outlook). Most only allow you to tag in one, not the other. PB did it by superimposing its own proprietary (ie non-portable) tagging system. You’ve done it by working with/harmonizing each of the platform’s own systems. Bravo! Also particularly like the automatic listing of all emails form the sender in a sidebar.

Now to the things I most miss from Postbox. They are:

  • One-letter shortcuts for tags (“topics” in PB), plus greater ease of tagging generally
  • One-letter shortcut (O) for expanding/collapsing all messages in a conversation
  • Keyboard shortcuts for filters, sorts, navigating about
  • Tabs, not so much for messages as for different views (eg one for inbox, one for msgs tagged “reply”, etc)
  • Links to individual messages for external use (Things, TickTick etc)
  • Quick Post
  • Focus Panel
  • Favourite Contacts
  • AppleScript
  • Apple Data Detectors functionality
  • Integration with Apple Contacts for setting rules (eg mark all emails from people in my Contacts list as “Personal”)

Some other notes:

  • Rules and Search Folders are a bit clunky to use
  • Calendars are fine, but look gross (very Windowsy)
  • Tasks I don’t find very useful, frankly. In particular, very limited tagging function.
  • Why not allow sorting by clicking on column heads?
  • Would like it if Compose was formatted more elegantly eg some way to define margins around text instead of having it stuck way up in the top left of the email.

These cavils aside, my congratulations on an exceedingly well-thought out and functional app, which is now my default email client on my Mac. (Sticking with Outlook on my iPhone for now).

As a Postbox user since 2009, who has been looking for a Postbox replacement for 2 years (saw the writing on the wall), eM Client is the only app I’ve tried that I wanted to use as my daily driver. I’ve forced myself to use several candidates as my main mail app, but my instinct was always to open Postbox instead. Not so with eM Client.

Having said that, I agree 100% with your list, and have several other issues of my own. But if it looks like some of best Postbox features will be ported over — e.g., keyboard navigation, shortcuts to show/hide mailboxes, toggle shortcuts in general (read/unread should not be two different shortcuts), more and better shortcuts in general, Settings > Accounts > Copies & Folders, etc. — I’m very likely to become a full-time user.

Hang on – it does that. Only sometimes it doesn’t: the columns headers sometimes go “dead,” where clicking on them does nothing and you can’t resize them or anything. A bug, I think.

Likewise. I was a Thunderbird user, then went to Postbox which I was on for years. Tried many other desktop progs but Postbox just seemed comfortable for me. I am feeling good about EM and have bought the pro version. Its great on PC and Mac. Have yet to try it on Android. Have heard bad reports but will see, Currently using Spark but as much as I like it, its a massive battery drain.

I haven’t pulled the trigger on buying eM Client yet, but I’m very likely to do so once I’ve found ways to configure it for my unusual usage (e.g., sent mail to my Inbox). Using it is relatively intuitive. Configuring it, not so much. I like all the options and tools and features, but it’s definitely one of those apps obviously built by engineers rather than UI/UX designers. (Having said that, it’s greatly improved over the last couple years!)

Android: I hope this doesn’t violate the forum terms, but I wholeheartedly recommend Aqua Mail. Been using it for 11 years, and have never found anything even close. Like eM Client, it’s super configurable (I’ll bet there are 100+ settings to tweak if you want to), but its killer feature for me is the option of not having a sidebar of mailboxes, but rather having mailboxes at the top of the screen, with the message list below — and when you open a message, the message list moves to the top, and the content of the chosen email is on the bottom. Saves soooo many taps, and the split between the top and bottom can be adjusted on the fly.

Great that eM Client on desktop works good.

Don’t know what reports you have read, but I can personally say that the latest Android mob app version works fine for me for eg: 4 IMAP accounts.

There will also be a new update for Android and iOS coming soon “according to another recent thread post” with improvements so keep watching the Playstore & iOS store for uodates. I’d reccomend to give the current mobile app a go.

Currently the app only has email, but will also at a later date, include the Calendar, Contacts, Tasks etc.

I have now installed it on my Pixel phone. It is slower to load and respond than Spark which I was using. This is what I had heard. That it needs to be a bit smoother and slicker. I am not at all bothered by calender and other stuff. I already have Google Calender for that. I just want it to work really well as a mail program.
