Would love to be able to remove an account from the favourites global folder.

I am not sure exactly what you mean:
If an item in favorites; right click on the item then select Remove from Favorites
If an account: Menu ->Accounts Here you can either delete or disable the Account

If you removed an account from a global folder, then it would no longer be a global folder.
Instead you could create your own Search Folder, and select which folders to include.
