Error on Windows 11 with eM Client v11 Microsoft Outlook (Classic) is not running as the default email program

Hello,
After upgrading from v10 to v11, I’m also getting an error message stating that Microsoft Outlook (Classic) is not running as the default email program.
This message appears alongside the eM Client logo on the taskbar.
My backup programs for Outlook PST files also trigger this error message and then stop working.

I’ve tried various solutions I found online, but haven’t found a fix. I’ve now uninstalled eM Client v11 for the time being, but I can’t revert to v10 because v11 somehow updated the database.

Windows 11, eM Client 11.0.1054.0, Outlook 2024, PSTBackup

Best regards

Hi @lecat.26,
On some Windows devices with both eM Client and Microsoft Outlook installed, Outlook keeps showing this message:

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.

When you click OK or close it, the error window reappears. It seems to have started after eM Client 11 was installed or updated.

How to fix it
We have prepared a registry file that fixes this error in most cases.

  1. Shut down both eM Client and Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Download the fix here: AlwaysUseLegacyMapiRegistration
  3. Double-click the downloaded file.
  4. If Windows asks whether you want to allow the app to make changes, click Yes.
  5. When Registry Editor asks you to confirm adding the information to the registry, click Yes, then OK.
  6. Start your preferred email app and check whether the message still appears.

If you don’t want to run the reg file, you can create the registry value manually:

  • Run Regedit
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail
  • Create a DWORD named “AlwaysUseLegacyMapiRegistration” and set its value to 1.

Please note: We have observed that this fix works in most cases of this error, but not in every single one.
If the fix worked once but the error comes back after some time, for example, after a Windows or eM Client update, simply run the same file again.

If the fix doesn’t help at all, please let me know.

Hi Jitka,

Unfortunately, the fix/registry entry didn’t help. That’s too bad.
I restarted the PC twice after making the entry, but the messages are still appearing. They pop up when PSTBackup, MailBackupX, and Outlook 2024 (Classic) are launched.
When eM Client v11 is uninstalled, everything runs without any pop-up windows.

Thanks and best regards

Hello,

I took another look at this.

I reinstalled eM Client 11. I then noticed that eM Client 11 had likely set the value for “Standard” under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail to “PackagedMail”. I manually changed that to “Microsoft Outlook”.

Then I set the AlwaysUseLegacyMapiRegistration key to “1” again — I had deleted it earlier.

Just to be safe, I ran the Office Quick Repair in Windows > Settings > Installed Apps and checked under Default Apps to make sure everything looked correct for Outlook (Classic).

Then, just to be on the safe side, I restarted the system, and now there are no warning messages:

“There is no default email client, or the current email client cannot fulfill the message request. Run Microsoft Outlook and set Outlook as the default email client.*Microsoft Office Outlook”

No more warnings, and my PST backup programs are working again too.

These are my current registry entries:

I hope, though, that I won’t have to tinker with the registry every time there’s an eM Client 11 update. Everything worked great with v10. What has changed in the program?

Hello,

After today’s update to eM Client v11.0.1201.0, the error message

“There is no default email client, or the current email client cannot fulfill the message request. Run Microsoft Outlook and set Outlook as the default email client.*Microsoft Office Outlook”

reappeared, and in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail, the value for “Default” had reverted to “PackagedMail”.
I manually changed it back to “Microsoft Outlook”.
It’s kind of a pain!

Best regards
