Email messages stop mid-sentence and the rest of the text is an attachment.asm file

After updating to version 10 (currently on 10.0.3530) I have been receiving emails with only some of the text visible. Midway through the message it just stops. I then have attachments with the rest of the text in them. They come up as “attachment.asm”. I usually only have 1, but today I got an email where they put some in-line PDFs and after each in-line PDF there was more text. So I had 4 “attachment.asm” files on this message. But that was just today’s message. In the past I have received emails without any attachments (other than the attachment.asm file). In fact I got one email that in the “read” panel didn’t have any text at all, but the little 1 line sample of the message that shows up in the ‘message’ panel had the start of the message text.

This is ONLY happening when I view the messages in eM Client. If I look at the email on my phone I can see the entire message as it was intended to be. And this only happened when I changed to version 10. I have never had this happen in version 8 or version 9.

Also this is only on a few messages. Maybe 1 a day at most, so most of the emails I’m receiving are not having this issue. But it has been from random people (never the same person twice so far) and over different email accounts. Gmail accounts, personal hosted IMAP accounts, doesn’t seem to matter.

To add a little more information, I received an email that was blank except for the attachments, but there was an attached “attachment.htm” this time instead of the .asm version and it had the whole message conversation (forward/reply/etc.) in it.

As can be seen in the below picture, the first htm was the actual message, the other 3 were just the typical things I get when iPhones forward messages (one for every reply on the thread). The PDF and DWG files were just regular attachments that I receive every day so nothing special about them. But as can be seen, there isn’t any text in the Read Panel, but there is the 1st line of text in the preview panel.

These are messages sent from one of Apple’s email apps. They have multiple HTML sections which we don’t support.

You will need to open the message in an Apple app to read the full text.

eMclient has always been able to open the emails just fine prior to version 10. And I have been getting other emails also sent by an iPhone and I can read the text just fine. Like I show in the photo, the beginning of the text is even showing up in the preview panel, so why not in the main read panel?

It has nothing to do with eM Client 10. You will find the same thing in previous versions of eM Client and with other non-Apple apps as well.

It is not all messages from Apple apps. Sometimes there is only one section and that is displayed correctly. But it happens that the app creates multiple HTML sections for some reason which we don’t support. You will need to open the message in an Apple app to read them.

Hi Gary,

just stumbled upon this thread because I’ve got the same problem, with the exception that I was already painfully aware that it’s an Apple problem.

But I have to strongly disagree that you’ll need to open those messages in apple mail!

Both “Thunderbird” AND “Postbox” can display Apple’s malformed messages with the complete text and without those annoying extra attachments! The messages may not be displayed exactly like they would be within Apple Mail but at least all the text is there…

I know for sure because I’ve used Postbox for years (my mother still does) and only switched in 2020 to eM Client! And Thunderbird we use at work to properly display those Apple messages because Outlook shows the same nonsense as eM Client does.

(Oh, and the old “Spark v2.0” could display those messages in full as well, by the way…)

Since you recently acquired “Postbox, Inc.” you should maybe ask your new employees how to implement this capability into eM Client!

Don’t get me wrong, eM Client is a great piece of software and I love using it privately but its incapability to display Apple mails is the only reason why we have not switched to eM Client with our company. As long as it’s just as crappy at dealing with Apple mails we might as well stay with Outlook.

Maybe you should look into that. Apparently, I’m not the only one who’s annoyed by this.

Greetings from Germany,

Niko

Well, Postbox is Thunderbird.

Thunderbird doesn’t combine the HTML parts, but what it does is show a preview of the HTML attachment after the message, so I guess it may appear a one continuous body.

Thanks for your reply!

I know that Postbox is/was based on Thunderbird. But it doesn’t matter:

Both programs can at least display all the text portions of the mail! For me/us that would suffice.

As I said, I know that the messages aren’t displayed exactly like they would within Apple Mail but at least you don’t have to fumble around with those “attachement.asm” oder “attachment.txt” or “attachment.html” files an open every single one of them in order to reconstruct the whole message…

Thanks!

It is very difficult to combine multiple HTML files into one, and maintain reasonable formatting across all the content. HTML attachments may also be considered dangerous.

Best is to have Apple fix the bug on their side.

Good luck with that

I’ve already tried several times but Apple seems to think that Apple users only communicate amongst themselves…

I notice, whenever anyone sends me a email from a webmail (gmail i can reproduce this with), every email shows as having 2 attachments in EM Client, a attachment.asm and attachment.htm. But they just contain the body text of the email. This is a email with just text in it, no actual html or images or web content.

How do i stop this from happening? Never seen this in any other email client i have been trying, and i have been trying over a dozen by now. Coming from Postbox.

I get heaps of email from users who only use Gmail via the web and “they don’t have multiple attachments like that”, and “do display inline images and web content” in the body perfectly in the latest eM Client V9 and V10 on Pc & Mac.

Could be those senders might be eg: forwarding an Apple Mail email via their Gmail interface which then doesn’t show correctly in eM Client “due to its non standard html coding” as @Gary advised, and then has those dbl attachments and only text in the body of your email etc.

If they are not forwarding an Apple Mail created email, then suggest for you to create a test email via the Gmail webmail GUI, and send it to your own email address and see if it then appears ok in eM Client or if you still have the same issue.

Now “if you are not seeing any inline images or external web content” in the body of your email for any senders emails, then you can adjust that via eM Client Privacy settings as could be currently restricted settings.

@cyberzork

The email account I am using in em client is an iCloud mail Account.

When I send an email from any Gmail account using the Gmail Web interface to my iCloud email directly, that EM client pulls, I get these two attachments every time.

I do have forwarding from my couple Gmail addresses to my iCloud email and aliases. And I just tested that having a email sent using the Gmail webmail to a Gmail address that forwards to my iCloud Results in the same two attachments.

This only happens with the Gmail webmail every other email I’ve seen so far hasn’t had this issue So I don’t exactly understand what you mean by it’s an apple email issue. When it clearly is triggered by using the Gmail webmail interface

The email being sent has no images or HTML in it as far as I know as it’s just a basic test message with one word in it that says test in the body

@cyberzork

To expand on what i said in my last message, there is no image or html in these test emails from gmail web to my icloud email account in EM Client.

What is so “non-standard” about a simple email that contain words only?
I open the 2 attachments, and the .htm contains:

<div dir="ltr">this is a email to icloud direct from gmail web</div>

and the .asm is just the text

this is a email to icloud direct from gmail web

EDIT: Making progress… i changed privacy settings from the default? “Block External Content” with all the sub options checked…to the option “Display content when email tracking is not detected” and the one sub option enabled.

That has resulted in no more .htm file attachment, but the.asm still remains.

EDIT2: I did a test email from the Webmail of IONOS, and that does not have this issue. Either sending a basic message direct to my icloud email, or to the gmail address that is being forwarded to the icloud.

Ok sry it looked like to me you also couldn’t see inline images and external web content and not just text email issues.

I did a test email from the Webmail of IONOS, and that does not have this issue. Either sending a basic message direct to my icloud email, or to the gmail address that is being forwarded to the icloud.

Ok so then as you now “only have .asm attachment files showing when forwarding” directly through Gmail to your iCloud account, (but not with any others), then you would need to contact Google technical support via either phone or there community website who can then advise why that’s happening with your specific Gmail mailbox.

I don’t think so… it is clearly a EM Client issue.
As no other client program, including Postbox, has this odd issue.
And, Google support would blame the third party email program, alike how you are blaming my gmail account.

It is not just my gmail, i have several gmail accounts, and have had others try, both personal, and gsuite/business emails.
Any and all simple text emails sent from gmail webmail, show the attachments in EM Client.
No where else, do they show up.

Forwarding has nothing to do with this. As I already mentioned, a email sent direct to icloud email, and it still shows attachments.

Sorry I can’t replicate those .asm files showing in my own Gmail mailbox via the Webmail or eM Client V9 or V10. I suspect it’s the “source of those emails” is the issue, and you need to contact Google support as to why you are seeing those in your iCloud mail account.

Test (text only) email sent to my Gmail account mailbox just now showing in the Gmail webmail Inbox and eM Client Inbox with (No .asm files) attached.

Are you a dev of EM Client?

Otherwise, i appreciate the attempt to re-produce it on your side, but just cause you don’t have the issue, does not mean Google or Apple can fix something in EM Client to resolve this annoyance.

I setup EM Client fresh, did not import anything from Postbox.

Until a dev can comment, i guess i just have to deal with this new software annoying quirks and bugs.

Edit. The .htm file is back. I have not changed anything.
Edit2. The 2 attachments still are present even when i send a email from gmail webmail in Plain Text mode.
Edit3. When i insert emojis or a actual image into the email, there are no .asm or .htm files as attachments.
