Been puzzling this one for ages, I think ever since I’ve used EmC but it’s got me bugged so I’d like some more suggestions.
If I sort in a folder using the Search box and the email address for one of my correspondents. I can find all emails sent to me from them or vice versa.
So why if I sort the entire folder by From (name) do I get two blocks of addresses and not one where all emails are combined for the same email address?
E.g. I have from emails from “Mags Carter” grouped and sorted after L and before N in the from (sender) list for one email address (ssntv.mags@…provider…)
The same sender also appears after R and before T under the name “SSNTV Mags” listing emails from the identical ssntv.mags@…email account as above.
Note: Mags is an EMC saved contacts in my address book - stored First name / Last name with just one email. When I send to her I see Mags C appearing as a “To” auto-suggestion, which I understand as being taken from my address book.
Why does emC not group all these emails together under the same Name? There are recent emails in both groups.
So Mags Carter is correctly between L and N, and SSNTV Mags is correctly between R and T.
In version 10 we have an option to show the name from your contacts, rather than what is in the message. So if you get multiple message from her or sent to her using different names, if you have only one contact for Mags (it can have multiple email addresses) this function will show all messages from those names/addresses under one name.
If you have more than one contact for that address, the first contact’s name alphabetically will be chosen for the display name. In the case of your example, they will all be displayed as Mags Carter.
Thanks for highlighting this. You’re right - things have changed and it seems this option is enabled by default.
I moved to v. 10 in the last few days and my thinking about what I was seeing in SENT in particular was based on the older version, last week. This has now changed, so that based on my first example, MOST of the emails sent to Mags Carter / SSNTV Mags are now grouped under M. There are one or two still under S…
Is there a way to understand what other sources emC might use to group under the same email address? Another frequent correspondent who I now checked on still has 5 groupings for what is so far as I can see, is exactly the same email address?
One discrepancy is for example the ‘…’ characters in the name, which seems to create a new grouping?
But looking at the emails, it doesn’t seem to be for example, that old emails are in one group, newer in another? Or emails originating from me versus replies to Peter doesn’t seem to be another way to perhaps explain the persisting 5 groups? Definitely puzzling!
I’ve blacked out the same word in all the five lines, in this view of the collapsed groups within SENT emails all relating to “Peter”. Thanks!
Forgot to add, in the logic of how the names are displayed / emails grouped, presumably it has to be Mags Carter, under M, fist name, not as per my contacts list sort Lastname, First name; so Mags Carter under C? …And then why are one of two of the groupings in sent showing Lastname first for the subgroup, when by far the majority have Firstname first - another mini-rule I don’t follow… Thanks again!
OK, I follow, and looking at the detail in the email headers, I see very small differences in the syntax, particularly the " and ’ characters…But my general rule of thumb is that I start typing the email address and expect it to be suggested from contacts, so why aren’t for example all my recent emails to Peter in the same subgroup, as I’ve picked his name in what appears to me to be the same way? That’s why I thought all emails initially from me might be in one subgroup and all replies to emails from him, in another - but that’s not the case? Thanks for any thoughts…
