EM client on Linux (Ubuntu LTS) DEC 25

Yesterday I installed Ubuntu as a duel boot with win10. Then I followed the install instructions to install an Android system image (Lineage). A few probs, I tried installing Waydroid but nothing happened after trying to start it. Read docs and found that my version of Ubuntu lts uses x11 as it’s window manager. So, installed Weston (as in docs) and used the Ubuntu terminal to start it. From inside the Weston window that was created, I started a terminal (top left of the window) and started Waydroid and android tried to start but there was no internet. I followed install docs again and opened up the ports on my firewall and away it went, happy days, then bugger, not registered to Google error (not play protect certified). Back to the docs, followed procedure there and after many alerts and a security check on my phone I’m in and working!!
Downloaded and opened EM Client and after allowing it to access googlemail all is working in full screen. Talking of which, I’ve found that adjusting the size of the required window is better done after starting the manager Weston and before starting Waydroid otherwise things get confusing as it appears (although maybe just a refresh) that Lineage reboots.

As a WARNING, it took me about 12 hours to do all this including redoing stuff because of MY errors, also all the installation was done via a 4g phones tethering as I’m on a boat with no other ethernet connections available. One other thing is that I no nothing about Linux yet, it was all done through the docs and occasionally some common sense managed to enter my thinking.

Maybe it’s not native but it works as well as win10. I suspect that someone who has a little more experience of Linux (maybe greater than 2 days) could script the startup of Weston and Waydroid for a specific screen size and automate the android startup.

Meanwhile back to the docs and find out what games etc can I run

Hopefully this may help someone,
Nyge

Just a note, this was used because I have an Nvidia rtx2060 driver installed that doesn’t like wayland (the display manager) and that is why I went through weston etc. On another display card you could take an easier path, as noted in the installation instructions on the waydroid web site Install Instructions | Waydroid
Another note: After starting Weston it’s better to resize the window then rather than after Waydroid has started. There is a command line option that can size the window but I haven’t read up on that yet or trying to edit the config files. So much to learn
