eM Client no longer synching to Hotmail

I last received email from my Hotmail account on 26 august 2026. I downloaded the eM Client update on 27 August 2026 (10.4.5674 (fcbf2a4)) and now the client no longer syncs my Hotmail.

My other profile (NS Webmail) works perfectly but Hotmail is a bust.

Any ideas?

Thank You,
Donald Koch

I’m having this problem too. I have another outlook account that uses the msn.com domain that’s still working and also a work domain using 365 that is still working. I have removed the non working one, deleted the app permission on outlook web and setup the account again in the client, aproving the connection and it will still time out.

Sorry to hear that. This just started since the last eM Client auto-update, but my guess is Microsoft is the problem. They are really great at breaking things (think Windows NT Server 4.0 service pack 6.0 that shut down networks all across the globe in the early 2000’s). I can still get my Hotmail using a web browser but I prefer using the client. MS is probably trying to force everyone to cough up the big bucks for the latest version of MS Outlook. No thanks.

Suggest two things.

1). If you have been making regular eM Client backups go to “Menu / File / Restore” and restore a recent dated backup when you know your Hotmail account was synching ok. Then see if that fixes the problem.

Note: If you have any data in Local folders at the bottom left or have any POP accounts, “before restoring your backup” go to “Menu / File / Export” and export any emails, contacts, tasks etc you need to a folder on your desktop so you can then restore those later via “Menu / File / Import”.

2). Remove and re-add your Hotmail account via “Menu / Accounts” and see if that fixes it. Normally removing and readding the account should fix it.

If removing and readding your account doesn’t make any differance then as @mshop advised “try removing your eM Client OAuth token” in your Microsoft account page and then “close and reopen eM Client” and you should get a prompt to re-authorise eM Client. See if that fixes it.

If restoring a backup or removing and readding the account an/or removing the OAuth token makes no difference, then “Click the dropdown on the right of Refresh” and click “Show Operations” and click the “Log” tab and look for any obvious error messages and paste them in this thread. We might then be able to see whats wrong.

Also if you are running any eg: optionally installed Firewall / Security programs or optionally install Antivirus programs or Vpns “other than what comes default with your OS”, try completely disabling those to test incase of interferance.

Hi djkoch1952, if you tried Cyberzork’s steps and that did not solve your issue, please enable and send us your IMAP logs and your operations log. To do this:

  1. Go to Menu > Settings > Advanced.
  2. Enable logging for IMAP under the affected account.
  3. Click the "Clear Logs " button.
  4. Restart eM Client.
After you try syncing emails and it doesn’t work:
  5. Go to Help > Open Log Directory in the menu to find the created IMAP log files.

For the operations log:

  1. Click the down arrow beside Refresh.
  2. click Show Operations, and go to the Log tab.
  3. Click Copy Log and paste the text into a text editor

You can email the files directly to me at [email protected]

I got the one outlook.com account working by installing the previous version on my computer running the client on macOS. After installing and I then installed the current released version and it also work. The client on my Android and Windows then stated working again without doing anything thing to those. Not sure why this fixed it but @Jitka I can send you log files from any or all of the devices if needed.

Thanks to all for the input. This turned out to be a Microsoft issue that “mysteriously” resolved itself overnight.

I kept banging on this for most of the day yesterday and reviewing my logs, that indicated it was an authentication issue (Microsoft). I didn’t make any changes to anything and this morning synchronization is working.

I was a Microsoft Certified Sysadmin for years and I learned that MS is great at breaking things, so this didn’t really surprise me. The fact that they fixed as quickly as they did is surprising.

Does this mean you have been able to download Outlook/Hotmail emails?
eM Client hasn’t worked on these emails for years. Still doesn’t. I posted about this problem with no response.
What settings have you used?

@Philidor

What settings have you used?

First check in the account General tab at that you have the following Services enabled.

Then if you have V10.3 or later, these are the MS Hotmail, Live or Outlook.com IMAP Settings

If you have V9-V10.2, then these are the MS Hotmail, Live or Outlook.com IMAP Settings

and the smtp settings? or are there some settings i must use in my outlook account?

and the smtp settings? or are there some settings i must use in my outlook account?

V10.3 or later MS Hotmail, Live or Outlook.com SMTP Settings

Server Address - smtp-mail.outlook.com
Server Port - 587
Security Policy - "Use STARTTLS (Always)”

V9-V10.2 MS Hotmail, Live or Outlook.com SMTP Settings

Server Address - smtp-mail.outlook.com
Server Port - 587
Security Policy - “Force usage of SSL/TLS”

Sorry, overlooked.
These are the settings I use.
The inbox does show a count of new emails at the top, but the Inbox itself is empty.
No storage folders are included.
When eM Client runs Hotmail has a circle running for a long time. I do get errors for a couple of emails from a daily news source, but that’s all.
Thanks for responding. I hope this helps.

If you are showing the Inbox count new mail but you are not seeing any mail, then if you have V10 “you might have Categories enabled” so the new mail is going into another Category Inbox tab.

Or you “might have possibly setup a rule” which is moving Inbox email to another mail folder.

Or “you might have setup a blacklist” so new mail is going to the junkmail folder or other folder.

Click this link below for more information on how to check.

Apart from the above link information, make sure that in your MS Hotmail, Live, Outlook.com account online “Settings” that you have enabled IMAP under POP & IMAP as per example below.
