I downloaded eM Client on my new computer and it works but I cannot get my contacts or old files transferred. Nothing I see online works, the menu for free version is different, you cannot create a backup to a chosen file. You can backup and it goes into wherever eM client puts it.
I did do a backup on a disk and transferred that zip file to new computer but eM client say the data is from an older version.
I have been using this program for about 9 years on my old computer and have over 30k in emails and lots of contacts.
I am stuck, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I presume you have Windows OS being you have eM Client for 9 years.
Close eM Client and then “on the new computer” go to the following eM Client hidden database folder and rename it to eM Client-Old.
“Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client”
Then “on the new computer” uninstall eM Client. Then download “the same version as you had previously” via the release history page and install that. Then open and “skip the setup wizard” and then restore your backup zip file you transferred from your old computer via “Menu / File / Restore”.
Note: If eM Client says to upgrade at that point ignore that and just restore the backup.
The backup.zip files normally go by default in your “Documents/eM Client” folder to restore.
Then once you have restored your backup on the new computer, “make a new backup” and then close eM Client and then download and install whatever later version you want via the release history page and everything should be there.
To make this less confusing
How to Back Up and Move eM Client Manually
- Find the Data Folder:
- Press Windows + R, type
%appdata%\eM Client
, and hit Enter. - This opens the folder where eM Client stores your emails and settings.
- Copy the Folder:
- Right-click the eM Client folder, select Copy, and save it to a USB drive or cloud storage.
- Move to the New Computer:
- Install eM Client on the new computer.(https://www.emclient.com/dist/v10.1.4588/setup.msi)
- Repeat Step 1 to find its eM Client folder.
- Replace it by pasting the folder you copied.
- Done!
- Open eM Client on the new computer, and everything should be there.

That will normally only work "if the old eM Client version they had before “is very close to the latest version”. eg: if it’s an older V6, 7, 8 or 9 database pasting it into a V10 database folder usually doesn’t work from my own experience.
@JB7 what version did you have previously?
@cyberzork im assuming they are coming from 9 deleting and fully replacing the entire folder so it should work ?
If you copy V9 hidden database complete folder contents from your old computer to the new, i would normally recommend “the exact same version” to avoid any possibly issues.
However if you had eg: V9.2.2258 on your old computer and you installed V9.2.2280 on the new one that should normally work. However if your new computer had V9.2.2307 that may not work.
Note:- If you do copy the complete hidden database folder contents from the old to the new computer, “close eM Client on both computers first” or you will get files in use errors etc.
