eM Client fails to send big attachments

When I try to send E-mail with 3 JPG files (1.5 Mb, 1.2 Mb and 1.9 Mb respectively), it gives me an error after some time: “[SMTP] An attempt to connect to Frontier failed”. It doesn’t have any problems to send E-mail with under 1 Mb attachments total.
OS: Windows 10 Enterprise
emClient version: 7.2.34711.0
Flavor: Free
Antivirus: disabled
SMTP settings (POP3):

  • Host: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  • Port: 465
  • Security: Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy)
Since Frontier is based on Yahoo! I’m sure it uses same Yahoo! restrictions on attachment size, but I’m pretty sure such restrictions are more than merely 5 Mb.
Please see screenshot and attached log of the error.

Thank you.

Try disabling your anti-virus software and see if a send is successful.  That’s typically what causes the SMTP error you are getting.

Tried that - didn’t help :(

Hello Andriy,

I found the information online that Frontier’s attachment limit is 3 MB. Therefore, it’s truly not an issue of eM Client but rather a server restriction in your case.

Russel

Hi Russel,
I just tried to send one smaller file of 1.2 Mb size only and no text (certainly less than 2 Mb). It showed the same error message and log. However the E-mail was sent (I received it from my other destination E-mail). So the case now is as follows:

  1. If I send attachments more than 2-3 Mb in size - emClient shows the error above and can’t send the E-mail at all.
  2. If I sent the attachment less than 2 Mb but more than 1 MB - emClient still shows the error above, but it seems it is able to send it, though the E-mail still stays in Outbox folder after this.
So I suspect the issue not just in Frontier attachment limits, but also with em Client itself.

Hi Russel, any additional thoughts?

Thank you very much.

Hello Andriy,

I assume it’s still a server-related restriction. Did you try contacting your mail server provider for further information?

Russel

Hi Russel,
I contacted my E-mail/Internet provider - Frontier Communications - and they said they don’t have any restrictions on attachments slightly more than 1 MB, but less than 25-30 MB. So everything seems fine on their side. I also tried to send the same attachment from another E-mail app (Windows Mail - built into Windows 10) - and was able to send it without any issues. I also tried to send via Frontier Webmail interface (based on Yahoo!) - no issues as well.

Thank you very much,
Andriy.

Hi Russel,
I just updated eM Client to the newest version, yet I get same error. Attachments even under 3MB, but more than 1MB can’t be sent without this error. Again, the antivirus is disabled and E-mails with such attachments are seemed to be reached at destination address, yet still getting the error like above.
I’ll be definitely switching to another E-mail client, as it seems there’s no attempts to investigate this issue further and get it fixed. Didn’t have this issue on Windows Live Mail and Windows 10 Mail, only with eM Client. Very, very disappointed.

Thank you very much,
Andriy.

I have the same problem with an additional nasty consequence. The message stays in the “Outbox” and keeps sending. One recipient  received 6 identical e-mails. I just tested it and got 2 messages. Now 3, so deleted it from “Outbox”.

Who is your email provider Rick?

I have the same side effects as Rick.
