Duplicate Downloads, Label Issues, and Managing Identities or Profiles in IMAP
I use an IMAP email account (e.g., Gmail or Fastmail), and I’ve encountered two key issues:
1. Duplicate Emails with Labels
- When an email is in the Inbox and also has one or more labels, it appears multiple times in the email client. For example:
- If the email is in the Inbox and one label, it shows twice.
- If the email is in the Inbox and has two labels, it shows three times.
- Sometimes, the same email even appears 2-3 times in the Inbox itself, which is confusing.
- Issues with Thread Management :
- Having multiple instances of the same email makes it difficult to track replies or manage email threads. It’s hard to know which instance belongs to the active conversation, especially when labels are involved.
- Storage Concern :
- I have IMAP set to download full emails, including attachments.
- If the email is downloaded separately for each instance (Inbox + labels), this could consume unnecessary storage, especially for large attachments.
Questions :
- Does IMAP download the email separately for each instance (Inbox + labels), thereby taking up additional space?
- How can I prevent this duplication while keeping labels intact?
- Is there a way to ensure only one version of the email is displayed (or managed) for better tracking of replies and managing threads?
2. Managing Identities or Profiles
I’m considering buying your email client and plan to use multiple email accounts. I want to understand how to manage them efficiently:
- Problem : If I add 5 email accounts, I don’t want them all to appear as one big cluster in the left panel, making it hard to differentiate or manage them.
- Preferred Solution : Is it possible to create identities or profiles? For example:
- I’d like to group 2 email accounts in one profile and 2-3 in another.
- This would allow me to switch between profiles easily, avoiding clutter and maintaining focus on specific accounts.
Questions :
- Can your client support such profiles or grouping for email accounts?
- How easy is it to switch between profiles or identities while keeping accounts organized separately?
