My email server has just forced me to go to IMAP. I have a very important folder down under local folders that I copied to IMAP Drafts, thinking I wanted to keep it safe. I’ve just discovered the eMClient Backup doesn’t back up IMAP folders, so I need to keep the one under Local Folders.
What will happen if I delete that folder that I copied to the IMAP drafts folder? Will it delete the same folder from my Local Folders? If so, can I rename the folder under IMAP drafts and then delete it without losing it under Local Folders?
b) why not set up another IMAP folder (call it “test”), copy something into it, replicate the same you did as you described on your local folders … and then delete the IMAP “test” folder to see what happens?
… at least this way you have a safe “test environment” …
I’ve just discovered the eMClient Backup doesn’t back up IMAP folders, so I need to keep the one under Local Folders.
eM Client backup tool backs-up the IMAP message folder structure and caches messages locally in the client which can be restored in offline mode and then transferred to Local Folders, but that’s usually “only as a last resort”.
So if you have copied Local Folder messages to an IMAP folder “and can see them all online in your webmail”, then you technically don’t need them in Local Folders as everything is then allways in the cloud to access on all your devices which is the advantage of having everything in the cloud.
However if you are worried and want to keep a copy of those IMAP messages locally as an offline backup, then yes you can either copy those important IMAP messages to Local Folders like you had before which is stored in the eM Client backup, or you can optionally copy those important IMAP messages to an eM Client offline (.emdf) data file in your eg: local user documents.
The (.emdf) data file then shows “under your accounts above Local Folders”. You can create message folder or labels under the Data file just like Local Folders. Also if you don’t need the data file open all the time, you can unmount it and then mount it anytime later when you want.
Got it!! Thank you for the detailed explanation!! I’ll just keep the folder I copied from my Local Folders in the IMAP account folder.
However, just for clarification. If for some reason I do delete the folder from IMAP, which has the same name as the one still sitting in my Local Folders, would the deletion wipe out the folder in both locations or just the IMAP location? I’ve never used IMAP, so I’m still trying to understand how it works.
