Deleting a mail from inbox moves to trash, not left in all mail

This is about Gmail with IMAP.

Using other email client apps, I am used to using the delete key to remove messages from my inbox as I read my mail. The behaviour that I am used to from other client apps is that the message will still be in Gmail’s All Mail (and of course, the “inbox” label is removed, so it’s no longer in the inbox).

However, eMC instead moves the message to Gmail’s Trash folder. That is not good, as Trash is purged regularly from Gmail. I want all of my mail to remain in Gmail’s All Mail. I see that I can use eMC’s “archive” button to leave the message in Gmail’s All Mail. But that is cumbersome to use instead of the delete key.

I tried changing my Gmail Settings, hoping it would help, but this didn’t change the behaviour. Here is a screenshot of what I changed. Originally, it was set to “Auto-Expunge On”. I switched that to “Off”, which allowed me to choose the Archive option in the next setting.

I thought that would solve my issue, but it didn’t.

Note, I do have “show in IMAP” enabled for everything.

I haven’t found another thread about this, so I’m hoping someone can tell me if it’s possible to do what I’m describing. Unfortunately, this is a deal breaker for me. I can’t use eMC if I can’t solve this problem.

Thanks!

The behaviour that I am used to from other client apps is that the message will still be in Gmail’s All Mail (and of course, the “inbox” label is removed, so it’s no longer in the inbox).

This is normally how all mail clients work that I’ve ever used with Gmail.

The Gmail Inbox “is not a separate folder” from the All Mail folder. The inbox messages “all are just links to All Mail” so are the same email and not separate.

So if you delete an email in your Inbox, it removes the “Inbox tag” from All Mail, so then its only visable in the Gmail Trash folder.

I don’t think you can modify your Gmail account online to do that any differently. You would need to contact Google via their website or phone.

The All Mail folder “houses all your mail” from your Inbox, Sent box, and Archived mail etc.

So If you want to keep the email in All Mail and remove it from the Inbox, then “Archive the email in your Gmail Inbox” instead of deleting it.

Quote from eM Client support documentation.

Gmail Archiving

“We support the native Gmail Archive function. This is a specific function which removes the ‘Inbox’ label from a message in Inbox, leaving the message accessible in the ‘All Mail’ folder”

Right, I understand there is only one copy of an email in Gmail and that the inbox is simply a label. But the email itself should still be in Gmail’s All Mail unless I go to All Mail and delete it from there. Since I’m in the inbox on the EMC app, not in All Mail, so when I delete using the delete key, the inbox label should be removed and that’s it. The msg should still be in All Mail. I’m not trying to purge it permanently with a delete key from the inbox.

I can use the Archive button to do this on eMC, but that’s an additional step vs using the delete key.

Maybe eMC should allow us to say if the delete key is a “move to Trash” or if it’s simply a remove the inbox label and leave in All Mail (Archive).

The client app I use now (Mimestream) and others I’ve used in the past do it the way I’m explaining.

I just looked at my settings for Mimestream and see that I’ve enabled what I’m describing. Here is the setting screenshot to show what I mean.

Can eMC do this?

Ok so your mail client has a “custom programmed option” to change the del key to archive instead.

You would need to put that then on a Sleekplan suggestion and ideas voting page. Include that screenshot example.

In the meantime, press the Archive button instead of delete.

I can use the Archive button to do this on eMC, but that’s an additional step vs using the delete key.

You can “customise the eM Client toolbar” for what buttons / actions you want displayed via “right click on the toolbar blank space along the top”.

See eM Client documentation below on Customising the toolbar too add the archive button for a one click option.

Right, I have added that Archive button to my toolbar already.
Well, thanks for replying. I’ll add this to Seekplan.
