I am getting trashed and deleted emails redelivered into my Inbox, some up to exactly three months old.

Happened to me the other day… none as old as you indicate but trashed/deleted only.
Hard to tell if it was an eM issue or my host…
Hi Dave,
this can happen if you have a POP account set up and choose to keep your messages on the server.
With a change on the server, the message can be marked as unread again and POP downloads it again (as all unread messages on the server).
Or do you have the account set up with a different mail protocol? Do you synchronize this mail to any other device or check it through webmail?
