A couple weeks ago I set up my father with eM Client because of all the good press and because it is “free” - lately however it is asking for a credit card #, saying there will be no charge and saying the license will expire soon. Of course we are very suspicious! is this normal and legit application behaviour?
Even if you get the free version, you must get a license. You can go here to get it:

It will NOT ask you for credit card info.
Did you download the program from the eM Client website? That is really the only safe way to ensure malware is not included. The file should be named “setup.exe”.
