I add a contact in EM but it never syncs to my google account. If I create a contact in my google account it will show up in EM. I can even delete that contact in EM and it will delete in google. I just can’t get a contact that I create in EM to sync to google.
Hello Dale, what version of eM Client are you currently using on your computer, can you please check the exact release number in Help > About? Are you using any security software on your computer that may be blocking the connection between the server?
Are there any errors thrown by the application if you try to synchronize the account?
6.0.22344.0
I run MS Security Essentials with default setup. I doubt that is the issue because everything else seems to sync just fine. I sync from google when entering a new contact to EM just fine. I can even delete that contact in EM and that delete syncs to google. Emails are fine, calendar seems to be fine. Only creating new contact on EM does not sync.
If you’re able to replicate this, can you please navigate to Tools > Settings > Advanced and enable GData logging for the problematic account? Save the settings and replicate the issue you’re experiencing, make sure the sync with the server has finished and restart the application.
If the issue persists and the contact item is not uploaded, please go back to the advanced settings window and submit the logs to me for more information about this issue, submit the logs to my work mail, [email protected] with a reference link to this forum topic.
I’ve found that you need to have Contact Category set = ‘My Contacts’ otherwise it won’t sync to Google. If you create one in Google, it’s set at that end. Looks like this is a Google thing.
Worth having a check at this, as I was having exactly the same problem
Jim
Hello Jim, I’m unfortunately unable to replicate this issue. Note that the “My Contacts” category is a gmail label, and all your contacts are still stored in the “Contacts” folder on your gmail account, any contact synchronised with this folder should be available and synchronised with gmail - however since gmail is using labels, you might be missing the contact in the online interface if it doesn’t have any categories/labels setup.
Regards,
I’ve had another look and my post above is misleading, sorry
Looking at the old Google Contacts, the My Contacts concept seems to be the top line grouping of ‘all contacts’ - but there is also ‘Other Contacts’ buried way down the page.
This is the bit that is potentially confusing, because if you create a contact in EMC and don’t add Category = My Contacts, then you won’t see this new contact in your Google ‘My Contacts’ list (and if you don’t know to look in Google ‘Other Contacts’ you’ll never see it!)
So you may think it’s not synced from EMC to Google.
More importantly though, it’s only Google ‘My Contacts’ that get synced to Android devices, Other Contacts don’t.
So if you create a contact in EMC, and don’t set Category = My Contact, then the new Contact won’t sync around all your Android devices as you would expect them to (don’t know what happens on iPhones / iPads).
If you create Contacts in Google, the My Contacts gets set for you, so there’s no issue.
So as far as I can see, from an EMC point of view, it looks like you must set Category = My Contacts if you want sync to work properly across all devices.
Which is all fine, and it all works great for me anyway - it’s just slightly annoying that all my contacts need to have this Category set as other than the sync thing, it’s meaningless and clutter and slightly illogical as Google Groups map to EMC Categories, by My Contacts isn’t really a Google group…
As an aside, if you look at the new Google Contacts Preview, I can’t see any way to see ‘Other Contacts’ at all, so the contact may as well not have synced - a work in progress I guess, but I can never keep up with what Google are changing anyway!
Using google contacts, it’s really all about the labels you have set with the contact (or mail/calendar). As far as I know android contacts sync applications should allow you to select which labels should be synchronised with the device, but that really depends on the client or device.
Regards,
I’m not sure I can accept the answer of I must select “My Contacts” for a contact to sync. That means I need to go through the 100’s of contacts I have in emClient and one by one make sure I select contact category of “My Contacts”. Seems like a bug to me. I should not be required to enter a category for it to sync. This is a non required field. Please fix. Mean time I have to go through and search all my contacts and any contact that does not have a category I need to either blindly set “My Contacts” or first check to see if it is in google.
Come on guys… You can’t call this behavior expected. I count on this sync to google to work so that I get the data on my phone as well. I had to call someone today to go onto my computer and look up a mobile number that I set in emClient on a contact with no category. Well, I was out of the office and needed to call and since it didn’t sync I first had to have someone log into my computer to get me the number.
Please get this fixed.
@ Dale, as a workaround, if you go into Google Contacts, ‘Other Contacts’, this will show you all the Contacts that don’t have ‘My Contacts’ set. You can now select all of these Contacts and then use the ‘Add to My Contacts’ button at the top. This will update the EMC Category = My Contacts. Doesn’t get around having to update this on an on-going basis for any new Contacts you add though.
I suppose, in fairness, the issue is one of Google functionality - it’s Google that decides to have ‘Other Contacts’ and ‘My Contacts’ distinction that depends on setting a value = My Contacts, and it’s Google that decides that setting this value also dictates whether or not that Contact syncs to your other devices.
So in a sense, it’s not EMC’s fault, HOWEVER… Google are one of the main players, and if you want to be in the game, you do need to, in some cases, play by their rules.
IMO, you wouldn’t want to hard code a solution for this, all we need is for EMC to allow you to set a default Category when you create Contact. Useful thing to be able to do, even if you don’t use Google Contacts.
Hmm, I seem to be having exactly the opposite problem. When I first started using emClient, I also noticed that only My Contacts was syncing. I decided to make that a “feature” by only applying that category to contacts I wanted on my smartphone. Of the hundreds of contacts I have, I only want about 80 of them on my smartphone. So what started as an issue turned into a feature I could put to good use.
Forward to today. I noticed that my smartphone now has hundreds of contacts that I don’t want there. I got on to emClient, and I looked at My Contacts. It still has only the 80 contacts I need on my smartphone. All the other contacts are directly under Contacts. So, I’m concluding that some update to emClient has changed the way contacts are synced.
My emClient version is 6.0.24928.0
Hello Guy,
I am not aware of any change in the behaviour of the Contacts, as ‘My Contacts’ is the default Contacts folder for google accounts.
I can suggest maybe using Local Contacts folder for the extra contacts you don’t want to synchronize?
Regards,
Olivia
Olivia, thank you for the reply. I did some more reading, and found that Google will automatically create a contact every time you send an email to a name it hasn’t seen before. You can turn this off by going to the Google site and updating the appropriate email setting. I just did this. So, I think Google was doing this, and not emClient. Since contacts are synced in both directions, I wasn’t properly understanding who was creating these contacts
Hopefully this discussion may help someone else encountering the same issue.
Hello Guy,
thank you for sharing this information on the forum where it can help other users
Regards,
Olivia
To clarify, nothing has changed.
Google Groups = EMC Categories, and you can either set or not set this = My Contacts
If you create a new contact in EMC, by default, Category will NOT be set to My Contacts. This new contact will still sync to Google, but it will appear in ‘Other Contacts’ in the Google UI (down at the bottom). This new contact will NOT be synced to Android devices (and not I assume to Iphones).
If you now set Category = My Contacts in EMC or Google Group = My Contacts in the Google UI, this contact will now be visible in Google My Contacts (and not in Other Contacts) and with WILL now sync out to all your mobile devices. It will not affect EMC at all, ie. the contact will still be synced.
If you create a new contact in Google, by default, Google Group is set = My Contacts, so this contact will sync to EMC and to Android.
This is exactly as Guy was experiencing, until the issue of auto create of Contacts in Google confused things. But Google was still behaving as normal, just the source of the contact had changed.
This is Google behaviour, not an EMC issue . The only thing I’d like (as I said above) is the ability to add a default Category in EMC (maybe you can in 7?)
I do think though that EMC support should though be able explain exactly how their applicatation works with probably the biggest global provider of contact data :)
Thanks for summing this up, Jim.
I’m facing the same issue with my clients using the emClient.
I get calls regularly about this issue and wish there was a setting to change to default folder in emClient.
Please make this happen or at least change the default to “my contacts”.
