Checking for Updates. No indication of anything happening

When using the Check for Updates option in the menu, when there is no update, can eM client indicate “You are using the current version” or similar? When there is no update, nothing happens, there is no indication that the check-for-updates is actually working.

I realize that updates are pushed out over time and an update is available but may not install right away. Mainly I’m wondering if there can be an indicator that “checking for updates” is actually doing something?

If there is an official fully tested update, eM Client will normally automatically push it to the client. They generally appear “as a popup to install” when you initially open eM Client. So if there is no update, then that usually means you have the latest official fully tested updated version.

If you choose not to install the update when initially prompted, then you can click the check the update later anytime when ready to install it.

In between that, then there are also Interim updates you can manually download and test if you like as well via the release history page.

Thanks CyberZork. It’s the scenario when I manually check for updates Menu > Check for Update and when there is no update available. In that scenario, eM client gives no indication that it is or has checked for updates… It would be useful, and reassuring, for a prompt to appear “you have the latest update” or “you are using the current version”. Currently, I don’t know if the Check for Updates has worked or not and I generally try it several times to make sure I’ve initiated it correctly.

For instance, this is the message in another piece of software when I check for updates. This tells me I successfully checked for updates but none are available at the moment.

Thanks. Update status was added in 10.2.1736

I’m a bit confused. I just read a post mentioning an issue in the April 10 update. I only started using eMC a couple of months ago, my version is 10.1.4828. «Check for update…» gives “There is no update available.” Yet, a check on the site shows that a v.10.2.1712.0 and a v.10.3.1524.0 are available (downloading automatically downloads the latter.) Also, I couldn’t find anything related to compatibility with Mac OS Monterey.

What should I do? My concern is installing a version that causes corruptions, with all the consequent hassles when having to reinstall the currently installed version, as well as recovering pref files, database, etc.

Hi @tingo. I saw something similar. 10.3 was out but eM Client was telling me “There is no update available.” I had to download and install it manually. A new version of 10.3 was released the very next day (the 10.3.1524.0 that you mention) and eM Client didn’t see that either, so I manually installed that update.

My experience has been that 10.1 was stable but 10.3 has been hanging and crashing a lot (multiple times per day) under macOS 15.4. It’s up to you, but my advice would be to hold off installing the upgrade for now while the developers investigate.

A 1000 thanks — I certainly will follow your precious advice! But I’d still like the support people to explain how this all hangs together.

On my Mac (latest macOS) no updates were shown. I manually downloaded 10.3 two days ago and then got the new version 10.3.1503. Today I checked for updates and I got the message “there’s no update available”. Then I downloaded emClient from the website - now I got 10.3.1524. There is definitely something wrong with „check for updates".

Whatever’s wrong with update checking has been wrong since I first installed 10.1.4828 on my mac… I just manually downloaded the update to 10.3.1524… that’s a lot of missed fixes

Not all interim updates on the release history page are automatically pushed to the client until they have been properly tested.

So that’s why the check for update didn’t find the latest V10.3 when you checked. But you can always manually download the Interim updates if you want to test them.

Note: If you do download them, advise first to make a manual backup via “Menu / Backup” incase you need to restore for any reason. Also close eM Client before updating.

Releasing of such a complex application as eM Client is not that simple. We have to do that in phases and very carefully monitor the outcome. This is why the automatic update is not shown automatically to everyone when release is announced. In the blog post about the release it is said that until the update is pushed to everybody, you need to install the update from the link manually. There is always a chance some things might go wrong even with the most thorough testing (version 10.3 had been tested for 2 months). For example now it seems there is a bug in macOS 15.4, that has just been released as well (almost at the same moment as 10.3), that may cause instability issues with version 10.3. It would be irresponsible to push that version to everybody. Currently we are evaluating that particular issue.
