Check for Update

Please remove the “Check for Update” feature in the GUI as we cannot trust the answer “There is no update available” while the releases page clearly states updates are available.

Add the feature again when it’s trustworthy again. Don’t come with bullshit like gradual roll-out of updates. I am not talking about auto-updating, I’m talking about the actual manual function “check for update”, a function which is the first to try whenever something doesn’t work as expected. It’s not like everyone is hitting that button every day.

As illustration:

I raised a question about searching in blacklists only to discover it got included in some update a couple of months later.
I just got fed up again with the inability to paste as quote functionality, I had already read on the forum it’s not supported. But to my surprise it actually did get added recently.

In both cases, Check for Update" told me "There is no update available. I then just downloaded EM Client again, installed it over my current installation and voila, there they were, the updates.

Please remove the “Check for Update” functionality and only add it again when it does tell users about newer release. Alternatively, add the (rather ridiculous) message to the dialog box inviting people to visit the releases page manually to really check for updates.

I am a software developer myself. I really do not understand the real reasoning behind the current functionality.

Please remove the “Check for Update” feature in the GUI as we cannot trust the answer “There is no update available” while the releases page clearly states updates are available.

The check for update does work, “but only when there is an official release update that has been fully tested” by eM Client and end users.

So that’s why there is sometimes “other interim updates available” on the release history page.

So if you want the very latest updates, then yes you can always manually download them “as you have done via the release history page”, but just be aware sometimes there can be glitches.

Lastly when official release updates are available, “you will also normally see a prompt to install it” (after eM Client has been open for a short time) where alot of users prefer to just wait till that happens rather than clicking check for update.
