error msg- —> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException (10060): A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.
I am using mail.btinternet.com on port 465 and use STARTTLS if available. I have also tried port 587 as alternative. I am using a desktop PC with Windows 11 Home. I have been using eM Client for over 10 years with same email address and not encountered this fault previously. I have uninstalled Avast antivirus as a recaution, error code remains the same. I have also tried rebooting PC, switching off router, same error code. I can send emails using webmail and Outlook on a mobile phone.
First go to “Menu / Accounts” and click the SMTP tab and dblcheck your have the correct smtp mail settings for your btinternet account as per below.
eM Client V10.3 or higher
(SMTP)
Server Address - mail.btinternet.com
Server Port - 587
Security Policy - "Use STARTTLS (Always)”
Specify your username and password
Or
Server Address - mail.btinternet.com
Server Port - 465
Security Policy "Use TLS on Special Port”
Specify your username and password
eM Client V6 to 10.2
(SMTP)
Server Address - mail.btinternet.com
Server Port - 587
Security Policy - “Force usage of SSL/TLS”
Specify your username and password
Or
Server Address - mail.btinternet.com
Server Port - 465
Security Policy - “Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy)”
Specify your username and password
If you have the correct SMTP server settings, then that can be sometimes caused by eg: optionally installed firewall / security programs, vpns or optionally installed antivirus programs.
So as you have already uninstalled Avast antivirus, do you have any other optionally installed firewall / security program or vpn programs installed ? If you do, try completely disabling those to test.
If you have none of the above programs optionally installed, then “try resetting the builtin Windows 11 firewall to defaults settings” incase something in there is blocking you sending mail.
Hi, thanks for replying. eM Client is V10.5, I have tried the SMTP options you mention, but they make no difference to sending emails. The only firewall is Windows 11 standard installation and I do not have VPN installed.
I will try resetting as you suggest.
NB: I have now used eM Client on a different WiFi network (at my son’s house), and was able to send email. He uses Vodafone Broadband. I use Sky at home, and everything is pointing to Sky Router blocking connection.
I have now loaded eM Client onto my Android Mobile Phone. I am experiencing same problem using the mobile App, unable to send email whilst connected to home (Sky) Broadband/WiFi, ok when WiFi disabled. Also ok when using son’s home WiFi.
This suggests it’s something in the Sky Broadband Router that’s preventing a connection. I’ve looked online for suggestions, and tried disabling iPv6 and switch off router for one hour. Again the issue persists, can receive ok but can’t send email.
As you can send mail ok on a different wifi connection then yes must be your router setup and not to do with Windows. Could be the default firewall in the router itself is blocking the ports.
So I would suggest to try “resetting your router to defaults” and then put in whatever ISP settings you did originally. They usually have a little pin hole in the router to do that which you hold down “with the power” on for eg: 10 secs till all the lights flash & go off.
If you’re not familiar with doing that and haven’t ever done it before, “then suggest you first contact your technical support where you got the router for assistance”. Some routers have to have specific settings and / or username & passwords put back in after resetting for your ISP connection to work depending on the modem / router and ISP connection.
If your computer has a LAN Network port then you could also test via that port to the Router LAN port with a wired cable and disable your Wifi in your computer “to see if even that works”, as could be just the Wifi part of your Router is blocked & not the Lan. If it does work ok via the LAN Port, then let your modem / router technical support know for troubleshooting purposes.
The Fix as you say is not just to power down the SkyMax Router and leave for an hour, but a Hard Reset of the Router. This was done by holding down the WPS button for at least 30 seconds until the router lights switch off. This resets the Router back to factory default settings. It then restarts as it would after a power off. However, it still took another hour before everything synchronised and I was able to send emails from Desktop and also mobile (connected to wi-fi). I have left it 2 days before reporting success as I wanted to be sure the fix was still working. I have sent test messages everyday to be 100% sure.
