Cancel Send/Receive Operations

This has been a missing fundamental function since 2012 (according to similar topics) and it’s still not possible. My IMAP accounts will randomly get stuck in a syncing status with no error notification and sometimes preventing emails from being received for hours until I notice the little spinning arrow circle and see it in the operations window. That can be dozens of client and work emails I don’t see in a timely manner.

The official and unofficial standing after all these years is still just close and reopen the client, rather than implementing a simple Cancel Operation function. Even a time-out error function (with or without a notification) would be better than ‘turn it off then on again’.

Could be many reasons. Need more information.

What version of eM Client do you have ?

What Windows or Mac OS ver do you have ?

Have you tried removing and reading your IMAP accounts ?

Also have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling eM Client ? , or tried creating a new database ?

Also are you running any optionally installed antivirus programs or optionally installed firewall / security programs or vpn on OS startup ?

Thanks for you reply.
10.4.5642 on Windows 11 and 10.4.5674 MacOS 26.5.2 though it seems to happen less on my mac
Yes yes and yes. I’ve isolated EMc from kaspersky.
I’m assuming the sync issues is more server-related then the client (I’m working on that too), but my issue with this feature request ticket is a lacking basic function of the EMc

Ok if you have already tried “completely disabling Kapersky” on Windows and Mac as you have tried everything else with eM Client, then sounds like either mail server issues, or a physical connection issue between you & the servers.

This might be happening if your eg: physical connection to your mail server is eg: “not stable enough” and you get alot of “latency / lag”, the mail client will keep trying but eventually time out. Sometimes that can happen with Satellite, Mobile / Cell or slower ADSL / DSL connections.

Or if the mail server is eg: “randomly experiencing server congestion / connection issues” it can cause mail clients to fail and time out and not receive at all. That’s usually though not an issue for major global servers unless there is an outage.

So If either of the above scenarios happens, the Mail client then won’t normally continue on syncing & can stop, and you will need to close and reopen the client to force retry syncing mail again.

You would need to have your IMAP logs checked by official support to determine the problem.

What IMAP server/s is this happening with ?

Have you ever lodged an official support ticket ?

You carnt normally cancel an IMAP account sending and receiving in eM Client once it’s initiated, unless you either “close eM Client” which then could cause a database error when reopening, or “disable IMAP in your account” but then you won’t see the account at all as it’s hidden from view.

IMAP accounts are made to receive realtime and shouldn’t normally be cancelled once initiated.

Technically, you can use the offline mode to “close” the connection (menu > File > Work Offline) and then turn back online to reconnect. This is faster than shutting down and re-opening the whole program.

But in an ideal situation, this should really not be needed at all, just like @cyberzork says.

@BenG Can you please send us IMAP logs from when this happens so we can check if there’s something we can do about it/detect the stuck state better to reconned automatically?

Go to menu>Settings>Advanced
Enable IMAP logs for the affected accounts.
Either restart the app or switch offline/online so a new connection to the server is made.
Then wait for the issue to happen again.
Once it does, send the IMAP logs to [email protected] with a link to this forum thread in the body of the message.
You can find the log files via menu>Help>Open Logs Directory.

Thank you for your cooperation.
