Can I disable gmail sync?

I prefer to have my emails downloaded to my email program (currently testing out eM Client). I’d like it to connect to gmail, download any new emails, and then DELETE them from the actual gmail side.  I’ve three non-gmail accounts which I been able to do this, but cannot get my two g-mails to NOT sync up.  I just want to connect, download to eMC, and have them deleted from the gmail side.  Thunderbird did this, but its got other issues.  What am I doing wrong?

You want to use POP3 rather than IMAP. POP3 downloads the messages from the server then depending on your settings, either leaves a copy there, deletes them, or leaves them there for a few days. IMAP stores email on the server, with a synced copy in eM Client.

Go to Menu > Tools > Accounts, and add a new account by clicking on the + icon.

Choose Mail > Other.

After entering your email address. choose POP3.

Complete the setup wizard with your server details. These are the best for GMail.

POP3
Server = pop.gmail.com
Port = 995
Security policy = Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy)

SMTP
Server = smtp.gmail.com
Port = 587
Security policy = Force usage of SSL/TLS

Once you have setup the account, you need to move any emails from your IMAP folder to the POP3 ones. Inbox should download what is there automatically, but any folders you created and Sent will not. Then you can remove the IMAP account from eM Client. If you want to keep the calendar, tasks chat, vacation responder and contacts, go the account settings and untick IMAP and SMTP.

To change the retention policy on the server, after the POP3 account is setup, you can either configure that through the GMail web interface

or in eM Client POP3 settings.

Thanks, that worked out beautifully.  I think at some point in the past I knew the difference between pop3 & imap, but that info fell out at some point.  When originally set-up, I just did it all auto… imap was obviously the default choice… and probably works out great for most people, but not for my purposes.  THANKS AGAIN!
