I’ve installed the app and tried to backup all my emails so I can clear out my inbox. I select menu/backup and it looks like it’s backing up but the files are so small (1.5mb). When I try to access a backed up email I get an error message (no connection to server).
Am I missing something?

If you have an IMAP, Exchange, Graph, Office 365 or iCloud account the backup doesn’t actually backup your physical emails “as they are on the server end” and “you only have a local cache of the emails”. So the backup saves your Settings, Accounts, Tags, Search Folders etc.
If you want to backup those type of account emails on your computer, then there is two ways.
1). Either go to “Menu / File / Export” and choose “Export emails to (.eml) files” and choose your account & mail folders to export. Then choose the harddisk folder you want to put them in & export.
Or
2). Create a folder on your eg: Desktop or Downloads, and then “create the same mail folders as in your account” and “then select all the emails in each folder” & “drag them to the matching folder” in your Desktop or Downloads. The messages will also then be in (.eml) message format.

Either way you can then reimport them later either by going to “Menu / File / Import” & choosing Email (.eml), or by just “Dragging the messages back in to the same folders” in your accounts.
If you have a POP account or messages in Local folders “where the emails has been fully downloaded from the server to the client” & cleared off the mail server end, then yes that will fully backup the emails locally & be a much bigger size in the backup.zip file when you go to “Menu / Backup” or use the Automatic Periodic Backup via “Menu / Settings / General / Backup”
Lastly if you have V10 / 11 you can also export mail to a eg: External (.emdf) data file which show above Local Folders when mounted, which are also good for archiving or storing mail.
