It looks like .avif-type images are not being shown in my emails (it displays the “broken image” icon instead), though .png images (from the same sender) do show up.
em client is up to version 10.1.4588. I don’t know if it’ll help but try Menu > Check for updates and see if the current version can handle the .avif file type.
Is there any indication of plans to add support for avif images to eM Client?
If it turns out that eM Client is limited to such an extent that it doesn’t support certain widely used image formats I’m probably going to move to another email client rather than purchasing a license for the new version.

We don’t know that on this free community forum.
So suggest if you want to view AVIF image files Inline in the body of the email, then you would need to submit a suggestion for that in the Sleekplan webpage.
However any eM Client version can already open / view a .AVIF image, just like viewing a .JPG, .PNG, .TIF etc by “using an external local bitmap image viewers / programs”.
You just just “associate a program in your OS” such as eg: The free Krita on Mac or the free Paint.net on Pc or any other AVIF viewer you like to that AVIF image file type, and then when you open the AVIF image file, it opens directly in that program.
