I save the e-mails from the IMAP server that I want to keep on my PC under eM Client in local folders (by area) by dragging them into them. My question: In which file on my PC are they then? Is it necessary and useful to archive them anyway? As I understand it, this would be unnecessary.

Everything in eM Client including Local Folders is stored in the hidden database folder as per the below links.
(Windows hidden eM Client database folder)
“Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client”
(Mac Hidden hidden eM Client database folder)
“Users\yourusername\Library\Application Support\eM Client”
So as you are storing messages in Local Folders, you need to make sure you are backing up eM CIient regularly using either the automatic periodic backup via “Menu / Settings / General / Backup” (Pc) or “eM CIient / Preferences / General / Backup” (Mac).
Or by manually backing up regularly via “Menu / Backup” (Pc) or “File / Backup” (Mac). You can see when the backup is complete in Show Operations via clicking the drop down on the right of Refresh.
The eM CIient backup files are all dated and you will find them by default after running the backup in your user profile “Documents / eM CIient” folder.
Is it necessary and useful to archive them anyway.
As you are manually moving messages out of your mail account down to Local Folders, then you wouldn’t normally need to use the automatic archive option.
The Automatic archive option moves messages older than X amount of days to a Local Folder. So if you are running short on server mail space, thats where you might use that option.
Ok?
Many thanks for the quick reply. I have changed the storage location in the settings to “D:\ProgramData\eM Client”. There are the folders “Storage” and “Backup”. So there is nothing under “C.\Users …” anymore. This probably ensures that the data is also available after a new installation of Windows and is also copied to my notebook during synchronization. So if I back up regularly now, the data should always be available at least twice. Ok?

Yes if you are regularly backing up the eM CIient dated backup.zip files created by the program and also backing up the storage location, then you will have 2 backups as you said.
Remember though if you are automatically backing up the eM Client storage hidden folder data, close eM CIient before running that or you will more than likely get corrupted files being its still open.
So you are really best just to automatically backup only the backup.zip files in the eM Client backup which is what eM CIient support reccomends. I copy the backup.zip files to an external drive & cloud drive.

You carnt normally locally synchronize eM CIient hidden folder data directly between two computers on the fly. You normally will get corruptions doing that. So best only to sync the backup.zip files.
