Your app seems to eagerly select a message in the message list for the chosen folder and display it in the preview pane (in the 3 pane layout I use anyhow, haven’t tried the other options). Archiving a message selects another one and displays it, switching folders (or gmail categories at the top) automatically selects a message and displays it, when deselecting the selected message it remain displayed and switching folders and back reselects and redisplays it.
Would there be much call for a less-than-eager behavior? I’m hoping for messages to be display messages somewhat less automatically and more deliberately, perhaps in part from paranoia about malware being triggered (on some platforms) when messages are merely displayed, though also simply what satisfies my brand of OCD :^) In more detail, I’m hoping for an option that enables this:
-
When opening a folder/category, don’t always select one message in the middle pane and display it. Currently you save the message that’s selected and reselected it when switching to another folder and back, please save and restore the state when none are selected and in that case clear the message view pane.
-
When deselecting a message in the middle pane, clear the message view pane.
-
When archiving or deleting a message leave the middle pane without a selection and the message view empty.
-
Have some way of selecting multiple messages that avoids opening any of them in the message view pane. Perhaps command-clicking / control-clicking in the message list pane from a state of no selection leaves the message view empty, also shift-clicking to extend the selection.
I’d imagine an option titled something like “Eagerly Select and Display Messages”, defauted to On which gets the current app behavior, but when turning it off results in the changes above.
…
Aside: I’m liking your app so far on macOS. There’s some UI details and choices that aren’t common on the platform but nothing too jarring. My primary mail account is a gmail one (i do use the categories) and have tried a few third party clients in the past hoping for some I like better than Apple’s Mail app or the in-browser experience (only on desktop, I’m happy with the gmail app on my phone). Specifically I previously tried Edison Mail and Mimestream. I hadn’t heard about yours until Steve Gibson mentioned it recently on the Security Now podcast.
