When you start to type an address, the autofill list appears. If it’s more than one item, when you press enter because you see the one you want at the top of the list, instead of reliably selecting that one, it selects whichever address the mouse cursor happens to be hovering over.
When this was discussed in the forums over a year ago, a support person rather curtly said eM Client works just like other clients, including Outlook.
I’ve checked a bunch of other clients, including different versions of Outlook, and NONE work like this. They all default to the top of the autofill list, NOT where the mouse pointer happens to be.
It’s easy to send a message to the wrong person with this inconsistent behavior. It could be disastrous for businesses. Until it’s fixed I don’t think businesses should allow eM Client to be used.
All other clients I’ve tried ALWAYS select the top of the list when you press enter.
That doesn’t happen to me. When i type a few letters of the recipient, eM Client automatically shows all the various email address’s and automatically selects the email address at the top" and not where my mouse cursor is. If i then press enter, “it does select the email address at the top”.
If i then want a different email address, i can then either arrow down and press enter on whatever email address i want, or click the mouse cursor on the email address i want.
So could be you might have some sort of eg: installation problem with eM Client or a possible problem with the cache in the recipient history or maybe an eg: older version and need updating.
So first suggest to “try clearing your recipient history” via “Menu / Settings (Preferences) / Mail / Compose”, and then close and reopen eM Client and see if that makes any difference.
Next if still a problem suggest to next “try uninstalling and reinstalling the same or later version of eM Client” and see if that fixes the problem.
Note: If you have Windows “don’t delete the database” when asked on the uninstall wizard. Then reinstall either from the release history page for Pc or Mac or Windows Store depending on where you originally installed eM Client from.
If you still have the issue, then “this can explain why this happens” and as far as i know is meant to be like this and “is by design” and is not a problem for me personally.
eg: When you type the email address and the autofill list appears underneath, “if your mouse is already over the autofill email address area below it, and you move your mouse” eM Client will then highlight that address its over which is why this might be happening for you.
So “don’t move the mouse cursor if you have the mouse pointer over the autofill list area” or it will highlight / select that recipient under the mouse cursor instead of the recipient at the top.
Saying to “not move the mouse cursor” before typing is just dismissing the problem when the problem is that eM Client isn’t following Windows policies for how focus is set.
And I’m not purposely moving the mouse–it just happens in the process of composing a message.
When typing an address, the focus is in the address box. That shouldn’t change with the mouse pointer location unless the mouse button is clicked.
No other client I’ve tried works the way yours does.
It’s like if when composing the text and you bump the mouse accidentally while setting your coffee down, new typing goes where the mouse pointer got bumped to even though the mouse button wasn’t clicked.
Since this makes it easy to send email to a wrong address it’s a serious security issue. Of course, you can just say we should double-check the address before sending. Each and every time, forever. Even though with all other clients all you have to do is double-check while entering the address that the one you want is at the top of the list and not worry about the mouse pointer being down the screen a ways.
