I would like to turn off automatic synchronisation of emails (i.e only fetch new emails once I click refresh) and I have amended my settings under the Synchronization section of Settings>General by unticking both sync at startup and sync items every X minutes, however I still seem to receive emails upon starting the application. Could someone please confirm if there is anything else I can do?

Hi Crofty,
as the auto-sync features are different for each of the email protocols (IMAP/POP3/EWS). I assume you’re using the IMAP protocol that is being live-synced with the server and the eM Client’s autosync has no effect on it. For your case, I’d recommend the Work offline feature in Menu > File > Work offline.

I have tried unticking that, but thank you for mentioning.
As a side note, I did try searching, but now I can see this question was answered and an option given for POP only with contacts & calendar still synching:
