Each time I start up eM Client I get a window saying that the program is checking all files as it was not correctly shut down the last time it was used. What is the correct way to shut down the program when I want to shut down my computer?

Give it a bit more time to completely shut down, before you shut down the computer.
It’s very slow to shut down - Check in Taskmanager…
Can’t give you time in seconds -depends also on your system…

Are you using the latest version? Some of the shutdown issues have been resolved in recent versions. Go to https://emclient.com/release-history to get the latest release.
If the problem persists, it may be because something is holding the database open-- typically an AV program. Try disabling your AV software and see if the problem still exists.
