Upgrade & Update - V10

I have been using eM Client on V9 and I first got a pop up reminding me if I wanted to upgrade to V10 few weeks back. Now I am getting a pop up advising me to update patch for V10.

I have not yet done any upgrades or updates.

My questions:

  1. Is it a must to upgrade to a newer version (V10 in this case)?

  2. Can one skip the V10 upgrade and move straight to the V10, update or patch? Will that take care of the version upgrade and the patch update…or should one do it in sequence - i.e. first the version upgrade and then do the update or patch?

  3. How long should we wait to upgrade to a stable version 10? From past experience with other softwares, we are advised that it’s best to wait before doing any upgrades till a stable release is published.

  4. Can we move back from V10, to V9?

No you don’t have to upgrade to V10. Thats completely up to you, but from my own use of V10 in Beta testing and the Release version “i would recommend upgrading”. You can read about the new features via the V10 blog eM Client 10 has been released! | eM Client .

You can either do an upgrade or a clean install of V10, but if you already have V9 “you would normally do the upgrade” so it keeps everything the same as it is now like your current Accounts, Tags, Toolbar setup etc, otherwise you have to re-setup everything from scratch.

The latest V10 release / update is available via the Release History | eM Client page. So if your current V9 was previously downloaded and installed directly from the eM Client webpage, then just close eM Client and download the latest V10 and install. That works as an upgrade or clean install in the one download setup file and includes all the latest fixes and updates etc.

Its already very stable on Windows and Mac. It was tested in Beta for along-time prior to the offical release where its also been updated since then as well via the release history page.

  1. Can we move back from V10, to V9?

Yes you can revert back to V9 if you need to via the instructions on the following eM Client page. Hopefully though you wont need to. If you do upgrade or do a clean install of V10 and have any issues, just post any questions on the forum.

Also before upgrading to V10 “make a manual backup first of V9” incase you need to restore for any reason as it makes it much easier to restore if you need to. “Menu / Backup” (Pc) or “File / Backup” (Mac). You can see when the backup is complete via clicking the dropdown on the right of Refresh top left and clicking “Show Operations”. Then close before upgrading.

Also if you do either upgrade to V10 or Clean install V10, you will see one of the initial options screens is to “Choose what options you want” like eg: The Recommended option at the top of the installer page, includes Categories, and AI options etc. So remember to choose install options.
