Sync errors

Error message: Synchronizing **[email protected]**/Name’s calendar/ failed due to the following error: 
The remote server returned an error: (503) Server unavailable.

is your hotmail account setup as AirSync or IMAP?

How do I tell that?  When I go under “advanced” settings, the “airsync” box next to my hotmail address is not checked.

Advanced setting is for setting up Logging of your account - if you have the option of AirSync logs that means your account is such, otherwise there would be an IMAP logging option.
Unfortunately that means that your server is not available because it no longer supports AirSync.
Microsoft just recently decided to end DeltaSync support, which means that all the Outlook accounts that do not use Exchange servers can only work using IMAP.
You will have to setup your mail account anew as IMAP in Tools>Accounts.
Just click New Account and instead of automatic setup choose Mail>Other and manually setup your incoming and outgoing server information.
