I changed the name of some folders, which was reflected on gmail fine - however, emclient seems to have lost the emails associated with the new folder names - yet they are still showing on gmail OK - is there a way to force a complete resync of all of the information, without deleting the emclient database and account?
You can right-click on the All Mail folder and choose Properties > Repair. That will delete and then rebuild the message cache for the account. So a complete resync without removing the account from eM Client.
