My ISP has had a major failure and I am trying to restore my last backup - 1 day old. I backup to H:/emclient. I have set eM Client to offline and then used File/Restore to retrieve the mail backup. I am not asked to select a backup file, no errors are provided, so assume it is using the backup on H:/emclient. eM Client shuts down and then imports data. It displays a message Unpacking: Archive/… but it is unclear if this is where data is being retrieved from or restored to? When the restore has finished eM Client restarts, but it is no longer offline and there are no emails either. I am using eM Client 10.4.5326 (97a2e75). What do I need to do to get my emails back.
Go to “Menu / Settings / General / Backup” and check that H:/eM Client is set or if it’s set to the default ”Documents/eM Client”” location, as could be your backup files where the emails are not in your H: drive location.
If it is already set to the H: drive location and you don’t get asked to select a dated restore, “that usually means you only have one dated backup” so it just restores. If you have more than one dated backup.zip file in that H: location then it could possibly be a bug in the Restore in that version.
eM Client shuts down and then imports data. It displays a message Unpacking: Archive/… but it is unclear if this is where data is being retrieved from or restored to?
When eM Client restores for either Windows or Mac is goes in the following hidden database location.
“Hidden mail database folder Windows”
“Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client”
“Hidden mail database folder Mac”
“Users\yourusername\Library\Application Support\eM Client”
So If you are not seeing any emails when you restore in offline mode, and the path to your backup / restore location is correct in Settings, then try closing eM Client and then “renaming the above hidden database folder” to eg: eM Client-Old
Then reopen eM Client in Offline mode by “holding down the Ctrl key while opening eM Client” and skip the setup wizard which will create a new blank database. Then try restoring your backup from your H: drive location and see if the emails then appear to rule out if it’s your current database issue.
If they still don’t appear, then “close eM Client and delete the new eM Client hidden database folder and then rename the eM Client-Old folder back to eM Client. Then try “moving your dated backup file or files with your emails in” it from your H: Drive location to your user “Documents/eM Client” default location.
Then reopen eM Client in offline mode and try restoring again from there and see if that makes any difference incase it’s a restore problem with your H: Drive location.
If your messages still won’t restore in offline mode from any location then “could possibly be a problem with your backup files” or something else, and would need official support to investigate that for you. So if you have a current active paid Pro, Personal or Business version go to the VIP support page and login and lodge a support ticket and link this thread. If you have run out of your 12 months support, you can get another year support extension via the following page.
Lastly once you do get your emails restored in offline mode “if you have an IMAP, Exchange, Office 365 or iCloud account”, export your emails to (.eml) messages, in a folder on your desktop via “Menu / File / Export” including anything in Local Folders if you also had messages there too, so you can then reimport them later when online again to then sync back to your mail server online.
So as long as your messages were all fully cached locally” in eM Client, when you backed up, you will be able to export and restore them.
