I have just installed 30 day trial and my primary email source is Aol. The SMTP port is 587, but I keep getting a diagnostic message of “server not responding”. What do I need to change?

I ran into similar issues when setting up a couple of my accounts.
I found that change the SSL options (not port) from Force… to Use SSL/… solved them. Also make sure AOL doesn’t have specific ports specified. I have both 465 and 587 for a couple of my non-AOL accounts.
Try to use:
port 25
security policy Force usage of SSL/TLS
