Problem with using AVG Secure VPN

I have the latest eM Client and use AVG Internet Security Multi device with Secure VPN. When I activate the VPN service, I cannot receive emails or download content. I assume there is a setting either in eM Client and/or AVG Secure VPN that I need to change? Until I resolve this I have to activate/deactivate the VPN as necessary which is a pain.

Unfortunately most VPNs block or interfere with mail clients.

You will need to modify your VPN program to allow eM Client to work. There is no setting in eM Client to adjust for VPNs.

Thats what I thought, I have lodged a call with AVG on their VPN service. It seems there are work rounds for outlook, mozilla thinderbird and apple email, so there must be something we can do.
