Preferred font has no effect reading text email

Text emails always display with a fixed-width courier (or something that looks similar) font regardless of the “preferred font for messages.” The size of the preferred font is used, but not the font face itself. The option for “Use preferred font for fixed-width plain text messages” is checked.
