I am not sure what it is referred to as, but the menu found at the bottom left corner of the application…can it be moved to the top or side?
No that cannot be moved.
is there a quicker way, (keyboard shortcut or mouse click) to change the view from email to calendar, address book, etc?
You can use a eg: direct Windows “shortcut icon” to open the Calendar and Mail etc.

Well, the mouse click is by far the quickest way to change the view. Just click on the icon.
But there are keyboard shortcuts as well.
