I agree with @tingo. I’m afraid this would drive me crazy too, so if this request is added at all, it should be as an option. 
I know it’s slightly less convenient than clicking, but using the Return key on any message will open it in a new window. So users can navigate with the arrow keys, open them with Return, etc.
