Could I read these backup files using the current version of eM Client (well version 9, I haven’t upgrade to 10 as of yet)? I’m hoping it works like Outlook, in that, when you open an old PST file it displays in a separate folder structure under the current mailbox view.
Unfortunately you can’t just open a backup. You need to restore it.
That will replace your existing database with the one in the backup.
If you want to keep your existing database, and there is some data you want to restore from that version 5 backup, and add it to your current database, you can follow the partial restore described here.
As the backup was made with version 5, it is a little more complicated because it is such an old database format. Follow the instructions and once you have used Menu > File > Restore and selected that old backup, eM Client will restart and ask if you want to import from version 6. Yeah, it says 6, but just choose that option.
