Never ending download

Client is always “Downloading messages”.

Brand new install with an AOL IMAP account.  I only have a total of 11 folders.  One of those folders has over 6,000 messages in it.  The Database is 1.2GB.  It’s no longer growing.  Sync time is the default 10 minutes and conversations are turned off.

(I removed all the “done” lines so the lists are shorter)

Here is an example of one of its rotations:

6:48:45 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: Done
6:48:45 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/
6:48:48 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Saved
6:48:49 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Archive
6:48:50 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Bulk Mail
6:48:50 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Draft
6:48:50 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Inbox
6:48:51 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Sent
6:48:51 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Trash
6:48:51 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Mom
6:48:52 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Recipes
6:48:52 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
6:48:53 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/US Bank
6:48:53 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/iPhones
6:48:53 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Sent
6:52:37 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Sent
6:56:26 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Sent

Right back around again:
6:58:47 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/

Granted there’s over 6k messages in the Sent folder but why is it “Downloading messages” from that folder for a full 10 minutes when there’s nothing left to download?  This install is 5 days old.  I have everything in that folder.  But every 10 minutes it spends 10 minutes downloading from that folder.

And now that I’m watching this like a hawk I see it’s getting hung up on another folder.  This one only has 200 messages in it.:

10:03:05 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
10:03:10 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
10:04:12 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
10:04:41 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
10:04:56 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
10:05:52 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out

Why is it looping through this folder over and over again?  There’s nothing to download.  I went through and physically looked at every single message in that folder.  They are all there and downloaded.

I tried setting the sync to 60 minutes to see if it would ever eventually fully finish and it did.  So I set it back to 10 minutes and again, it spends 100% of the time downloading messages.

Well the “done” line indicates the end sync for each folder, doesn’t it? That is the important data so omitting it kinda makes the log meaningless.

There’s a done line in between every single line that is the exact same time as the following line.  So for 99% of them you already know that info.  Just look at the next line.  There is zero delay in between processes.  The only real missing one is the last one that shows Sent took even longer than it already shows you.

If you want a longer log, here you go:

There should be zero delay between the done line and the next as the folders are processed one at a time. As soon as one is done, the next starts so there is no delay between them.  Maybe there could appear a second delay in 1% because the one finished at .99 of a second and the next started at the next second. But practically there is no delay.

However, the done line references the previous line, not the next one. It is important information.

10:52:51 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Saved
10:52:52 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: Done
10:52:52 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder Justin AOL/Archive

This shows you that the Saved folder took 1 second to sync. It has nothing to do with the Archive folder.

Where you have longer delays like this:

10:59:47 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Sent
11:02:36 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: Done

that could mean that you sent a message with a large attachment. It will take time to sync the attachment between the client and the server.

Yes, I made that perfectly clear at the end of my last post, thank you.  Every single done line can be replicated with the time of the next action with the exception of the very last one.  However my first post already made it perfectly clear that the Sent folder took from AT LEAST 6:48:53 - 6:56:26 to sync.  That’s the point.   The additional couple minutes extra for the last done line doesn’t matter.

"that could mean that you sent a message with a large attachment. It will take time to sync the attachment between the client and the server. "

Nope.  I haven’t sent a single email in the 5 days this has been setup and that doesn’t account for it downloading 100% of the time.

I can close the app and open it and it will take 12 minutes to fully sync.

I can then close the app and open it again and it will take 12 minutes to fully sync.

At any point in time with zero activity I can click Refresh and it’ll take around 12 minutes to fully sync.

I really don’t see how “sending an email with a large attachment” (that I never did) accounts for 5 days of “downloading messages” or “every 10 minutes it spends 10 minutes downloading from that folder”.  That’s 7,200 minutes worth of straight downloading.

This app is not syncing properly.  No other client I’ve ever used has taken this long to sync every single time.  Windows Mail, Windows Live mail, Thunderbird, Outlook…

Also, it’s doing this on two different machines.  The other machine is a new build.

It’s obviously having a very hard time properly syncing a 6000 item IMAP folder.  But then again it can barely handle the 200 message IMAP folder either.

And what about it hammering that 200 item folder?  I’ve watch it do that numerous times as well.  Here it is again with the done lines filled in:

10:03:05 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
10:03:10 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: Done
10:03:10 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out

10:05:52 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: Done
10:05:52 AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Downloading messages: For folder Justin AOL/Saved/Try Out
(doesn’t matter) AM Justin AOL [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: Done

Can you setup a non-AOL IMAP account and see if you get the same behavior? Gmail doesn’t count as it is not standard IMAP.

Yes, the other machine has another AOL account with very little email and that account syncs almost instantly.  It also has two other accounts that are Exchange based but using IMAP and they also sync almost instantly.  In fact they only say Synchronizing.  They never perform a “downloading messages” task unless there’s something to actually download.

1:01:28 PM ******** (ACCOUNT1) [IMAP]  Synchronizing subfolders: For folder ******** (ACCOUNT1)/

Two accounts done within the same second.  Probably 1200 emails between them both.

The other AOL Account:

1:01:34 PM AOL2 [IMAP]  Synchronizing messages: For folder AOL2/Inbox

For some reason it came back to this inbox while still syncing the Justin AOL account:
1:06:33 PM AOL2 [IMAP]  Synchronizing messages: For folder AOL2/Inbox
1:06:33 PM AOL2 [IMAP]  Synchronizing messages: Done

No download on that either.  For whatever reason it wants to “download” my main AOL account for a long time every sync.

I removed my main AOL account from one of them and left the other three.  Sync is a few seconds long and it never goes through downloading unless there’s an actual message to download.

I turned off Sync and added the account back.  I noticed this time it put an AOL icon next to the account.  That wasn’t there before and still isn’t on my other machine.  With sync turned off this time I’ll let it download everything again.  This time it shouldn’t hit a sync loop.  Maybe that caused something to get corrupt the first time.  Wont know for a while though.  Let it run over night.

Sounds positive. Look forward to hearing the result.

Didn’t change anything  Still takes over 10 minutes to sync that account.  This log makes sense.  For example, look at Bulk Mail towards the bottom.  5 full seconds to sync message flags?  There are ZERO messages in that folder.  So why did it start 10 different processes for that?  And again 8 minutes worth of downloading messages for a folder with zero changes, every single time it syncs.

Is there a deeper debug log we can look at?

There is more advanced logging, which can be enabled in the account settings.

Usually these logs are only of use to the developers, but you can have a look and see if they are of any help. You will find them in C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client\Logs.

Also, you will need to turn them off after some time as the directory can grow quite large if left running.

I’ll check that out thanks.
