I need a control to reliably move to the first unread message!! Right now it seems to jump to the last unread message and getting back to the first by scrolling is a REAL PAIN!!!

You can do that with the Unread Favorites folder.
Just change the sort order to Sorted by Received > Ascending, then the oldest unread message will always be at the top of the message list.
It is set to sort by received, ascending BUT every time a new message arrives it jumps to the bottom of the pile and I have to painfully scroll back.
