Missing archive button

Just downloaded and set up Emclient with both myine and my wife’s gmail based IMAP email accounts. Only issue is, mine displays the Archive button and hers does not. ANy ideas how I can make her Archive button show?

Hi Bert, the Archive button is only displayed for Gmail accounts and only in the Inbox folder. Where exactly are you missing this button?
What version of eM Client are you currently using on your computer(s)?

Thank you,
Paul.

Hi Paul

Firstly, thanks for the quick reply. Version is 6.0.21015.0.

When I select my inbox, I get the Archive button as per http://cdn.img42.com/60e683a8fda6df51e02f4e9f6f371426.png

When I select her inbox, I get: http://cdn.img42.com/3df75c7bd7f27b89ab288611291e2290.png

Both email accounts are Gmail accounts.

Hi Bert, can you please make sure you have the “All Mail” folder available for both of your accounts? If not, you have to enable this folder for IMAP connections in your Gmail settings, unless this folder is available, the Archive feature can not work properly, as the archiving button moves your email from the inbox to the All Mail folder (i.e. the Archive).

Hope this helps,
Paul.

Thanks Paul, that would be it as I ‘hide’ the All Mail folder in her account so archives messages don’t get accidently deleted. Is there any other way to ‘hide’ the All Mail folder and still have the archive feature?

Actually, I see that I can ‘hide’ the All Mail folder which should do the trick. Only issue now is when I ‘Archive’ a message from my Inbox, I see two copies in ‘All Mail’ in Emclient?

Hi Bert, I believe you should be able to hide the All Mail folder in eM Client as well.
Right click your account and select “Show/Hide folders”, then select the All Mail folder to be hidden. Hopefully the archive button will still be included.

Thank you,
Paul.

Hi again Bert, what layout are you using? Are you using the columns view (messages on bottom) or the messages on the right layout?
If there’s an duplicate email in the “All Mail” folder, this might be caused by the Gmail labeling issue, e.g. if an email is received and is assigned with a label (such as unread, flagged, starred), this email is unfortunately assigned with a different UID as well, thus eM Client displays the message multiple times (based on a number of assigned labels), but if this is the cause you should be able to display the folder where the email is located.

Note that All Mail is considered a label just as well as other folders.

This is unfortunately something we can’t change for gmail accounts, and the only way to avoid this is to hide the All Mail folder from the IMAP connection.

Hope this helps,
Paul.

Cheers again Paul. Impressed with the support and will put my money where my mouth is!

I’d happily hide the All Mail folder but then I have no way of archiving mail on the Gmail server?

Oh. Using messages at bottom…

Hi again, yes unfortunately in this case it’s either archiving or duplicate messages in your All Mail folder.
As I noted before, we’d like to improve this behavior, but unfortunately it’s not possible currently, hopefully in future releases.

If you’re using messages on the bottom you can add column to show “folder” to see if the message is in the All Mail folder or in multiple folders.

Thank you,
Paul.

In a perfect world, I need to Archive every email that comes in on the Gmail server. I’m not sure if there is a setting that will allow this?

Shame, I love everything else about this client.

Hi Bert, as you could see the Archive button is only available in your inbox, but if you archive the message from Inbox it will be always archived, the message duplicity based on a number of labels it’s assigned with causes only a slight discomfort of seeing message multiple times in the All Mail folder, however you should see it properly in your webmail application.

Hope this helps,
Paul.

Thanks Paul

I am going to give this another go. Interestingly, sometimes archived messages duplicate and sometimes they don’t. Are you able to tell when or why this occurs?

Re ‘discomfort’ (nice word!) I would prefer the All Mail not to show at all, even behind ‘More’. But I appreciate it must in order for archive to work

Hi again Bert, just as I posted above, this is due to Gmail’s labeling system, if you receive a message it might get assigned with separate labels by gmail, however only the gmail interface can handle these labels properly, for IMAP connection each email is assigned a different label but also a different UID of the message, this causes email clients to see the message duplicated in special folders or for the All Mail folder, as each of the labels are archived with the original message.

Between labels, flags as flagged, unread, starred or favorites can be applied as labels, but there’s unfortunately a limited number of ways how to avoid this issue:

  • not using the all mail folder
  • not using labels
    Hope this helps,
    Paul.

Thanks Paul

When you say ‘not using the all mail folder’ presumably you mean ‘hiding’ it as it needs to exist for archive to function correctly right?

Hi again, I meant hiding it from the IMAP connections, that can resolve the duplicate issue, however you (as you said) need it for the archiving feature.
Unfortunately this is a tricky situation where no exact solution can be provided at this moment, you can hide the IMAP folder so it’s displayed under “More”, but that won’t help the duplicate issue in the All Mail folder.

Thank you,
Paul.
