As the title suggests, is there a way to simply upload the archived emails back to the gmail servers?
How long does it take to archive? It seems to be stuck at “synchronising message flags” forever
Can I open the archived folders with another email app, such as Thunderbird for example?

if you mean the Local Archive folders you can simply Move the messages back to their previous folders and they will synchronize back with the server.
The Archiving time depends on how many messages are being archived.
You can export the Archived messages to EML files which is a standard email message format and other mail clients should respect it (TB definitely does).
