I’d like to know whether there needs to be an iCloud-related mail account set up in order for iCloud synching to work. I am restricted to two mail accounts and would like to know if I can delete the mail account with my iCloud email address in it.

you can set up iCloud Calendar and Contacts separately, unfortunately, since these are connected to a Mail service, they will count as a second mail account as well.

Thanks, Olivia. Seems as though the restriction to two accounts is really a restriction to only one account if I am using iCloud to synch Contcts and Calendar.

the restriction is to 2 accounts with Mail service available.
Unfortunately even if you setup a stand-alone iCloud calendar account, the iCloud mail service is detected and counts as a second mail account.
