I am getting an error [XMPP] attempt to connect failed, it happens regularly but sometimes with a different email address or SMTP or IMAP

Not a solution, but as a temporary fix you could just disable the Chat protocol if you are not using it.

Go to Menu > Tools > Accounts and on the General tab for the account, untick the XMPP service.
