Is there any likelihood of an option to make ‘File as Company’ as default choice?
I’m in the unfortunate position of using eMClient via SoftMaker, so there’s no point in asking them.

From what I have understood you want to be able to sort contacts (left bottom button).
and then under tab “By Company” and then “file as company”.
I will put this into under consideration and we will discuss this feature intern. but I can’t guarantee that it will be done in close future as there are alot more requested features to be done.

Yes, that would be one good option.
Actually, I was referring to each time I create a new contact, I have to copy & paste the company name into the box, as the defaults are either first name, surname, or vice-versa.
In Microsoft Outlook, I can choose sevral default settings - I’m sure you know this.
